Is anybody shocked the boy suffers from gender confusion?
(LA Times)- A good day is when Luc wakes up and wants to be a tractor for Halloween. Or a helicopter. Or Hercules. Or anything other than a princess, bounding door-to-door in tiara and tulle.
A few weeks ago, the 4-year-old boy's desire to trick-or-treat as a princess sparked a dilemma for his two moms, Anna and Louisa Villeneuve: Which do you honor and protect, your child's independent spirit or tender feelings?
"My first reaction was 'He wants to be a princess? We're there!' " said mama Anna. But almost everybody she talked with about Luc's intention told her, "Whoa; that's a bad, bad, bad idea."
For a girl who grew up wanting to dress like a boy, Luc's choice felt like a blow against stereotyping. "But I'm trying to leave my inner activist at home," she said, "and just do what's best for my son.
"It's one thing to say 'Son, you can be anything you want. Our society needs to be less uptight.' "
This seems to be a big thing on the mommy boards and mommy blogs. These moms, married to men, are ecstatic when their sons want to play with dolls, wear nail polish or dress as princesses. It seems to be a big screw you to society. They are equally crushed when their sons leave the dolls, nail polish and princess dresses behind and start making guns out anything they can get their hands on.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that these moms aren't encouraging this behavior. My problem is your child shouldn't have to follow your ideology or be used as your social sounding board. I am all for kids making decisions on such superficial situations, but most of these moms (yes, the majority are moms) are pushing their agenda on their kids. It is horrible when Conservatives or Christians do it, but it is okay when the left does it.
I don't have a problem with a boy dressing up as a princess for Halloween. Plenty of straight adult men dress as women for Halloween, and people (who are not totally uptight) find those costumes amusing. I'll bet it is the moms of the little girls, and closed-minded right-wingers who throw the biggest fit about this. Get over it. It's Halloween. Everyone should be able to dress as anything they want.
ReplyDeleteI believe children are much better off when they have good parental role models of both sexes. Unfortunately, many in heterosexual homes don't have this opportunity either. It is part of what is fundamentally wrong in our society.
ReplyDeleteWhen adult men dress up as women for Halloween, they do it in a jokingly way. Knowing full well it's not really what they enjoy. Unless of course they are gay/or enjoy being transvestites. Not so for a 4 year old child.
ReplyDeleteThe 4 year old is unable to express if this is an inherent feeling or learned behavior. Adhering to society norms is not strange or unusual. This child should be taught as such.
Most people find this behavior appalling. The above commenters are just anti- Christian bigots.
