Amusing: Climate Change activists give up rowing to Arctic because of too much ice...

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch.
We row into Cambridge Bay, Nunavut this afternoon – August 28th, 2013 to officially conclude the Mainstream Last First expedition. The snow squalls that dogged us earlier in the day have lifted and blue sky and sun greet us as we end our journey. It feels like a fitting end.
Over the past 54 days we traversed more than 1500-kms of the Northwest Passage from Inuvik, NWT to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut and come away humbled and awed by the experience. We had hoped to make it to Pond Inlet, Nunavut by early September but this has proven impossible. Severe weather conditions hindered our early progress and now ice chokes the passage ahead.
Our ice router Victor has been very clear in what lies ahead. He writes, “Just to give you the danger of ice situation at the eastern Arctic, Eef Willems of “Tooluka” (NED) pulled out of the game and returning to Greenland. At many Eastern places of NWP locals have not seen this type ice conditions. Residents of Resolute say 20 years have not seen anything like. Its, ice, ice and more ice. Larsen, Peel, Bellot, Regent and Barrow Strait are all choked. That is the only route to East. Already West Lancaster received -2C temperature expecting -7C on Tuesday with the snow.”

Obamacare Fallout: Low Wage Earners Having Work Hours Cut...

Obamacare is the Democrats war on the working poor...

Via WFB:
Employers of low wage workers are cutting work weeks as Obamacare implementation comes closer, according to Investors Business Daily.
Workweeks have shrunk over the last 18 months for 30 million workers in industries where non supervisors make about $14.50 an hour or less. Analysts say that employers are cutting hours for low wage workers to avoid penalties required by Obamacare. According to Business Daily:
As a whole, low-wage industry groups added just shy of 1 million jobs in the 18 months through June, but total hours worked grew one-third slower than payrolls over that span. In effect, the shorter workweek in low-wage industries boosted payrolls by 320,000.
For a profit-making firm facing a 40% federal and state tax rate, the $3,000 annual, nondeductible fine employers may face for each worker who accesses ObamaCare subsidies is equal to $5,000 in deductible wages.
Thus, for a worker earning $15,000 in compensation, ObamaCare could raise an employer’s cost by one-third.

Low Information Voters In For Shock: 40% Think Obamacare Has Been Overturned Or Repealed...

I hope most of this 40% are the young people who voted for Obama. Their wealth is going to be transferred to an older generation through higher and mandatory health insurance premiums or penalties taxes. This is the only way Obamacare can provide affordable health insurance to older people with preexisting conditions.
WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – More than four-in-ten Americans have said they believe President Obama’s 2010 federal health care law has been repealed, overturned in court or are simply just unsure if it is still a law.
According to an August Kaiser Health Tracking poll, those Americans, who account for 44 percent of the nation, remain unsure if the Affordable Care Act – often referred to as “Obamacare” – is in effect, even as the Oct. 1 launch date of the health insurance exchange approaches.

Obama says he’s considering a limited and narrow action in response to a Syrian chemical weapons attack

Does Syria have an aspirin factory
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he hasn’t made a final decision about a military strike against Syria. But he says he’s considering a limited and narrow action in response to a chemical weapons attack that he says Syria’s government carried out last week.
Obama says that attack was a challenge to the world and threatens U.S. national security.
Obama’s comment came after the U.S. released an intelligence assessment that found with “high confidence” that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government carried out a chemical weapons attack last week.
The U.S. says the attack killed more than 1,400 people.
Obama spoke before meeting at the White House with three Baltic leaders.

Is Your Congress Critter Avoiding You?

The old fashion town hall is becoming rare these days. Most Representatives are afraid to face their constituents in a uncontrolled situation.
This summer is all about keeping a safe distance from voters and sticking to the party script. Before Congress left town, House Democratic and Republican leaders handed out “tool kits” full of talking points and specific event ideas, along with sample editorials written and ready to be planted in hometown newspapers. This enables them to stay within the preprogrammed Washington bubble even when they’re outside the safety of the Beltway.
Both parties’ tool kits urge members to focus on small gatherings with friendly audiences, keeping in touch with the public on Facebook (FB) and Twitter. Democrats were told to play up Obamacare benefits. “Find a woman in your district who has a ‘pre-existing condition,’ such as being a breast cancer survivor, and who has had a hard time finding insurance, and hold a press conference,” party leaders suggest. Talk about immigration reform in “meet-and-greets with successful immigrant entrepreneurs from the district or from the state. Have them tell their inspirational story.”
Here are a couple of samples of what strikes fear in Congressmen and women.

Pentagon moving a fifth cruise missile armed warship with to the eastern Mediterranean Sea

War drums...

Via LA Times:
The Pentagon is moving a fifth warship armed with cruise missiles to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, giving the U.S. more firepower for a possible attack on Syria in response to alleged use of chemical weapons, a defense official said.
The guided-missile destroyer Stout is expected to arrive in the area Thursday, joining four other missile-carrying U.S. destroyers within range of Syria.
Each can carry up to 90 cruise missiles, though experts say they are likely carrying about half that number. Cruise missiles have a range of nearly 1,000 miles, allowing the vessels carrying them to stay well out of range of Syria’s anti-ship missiles, even when they launch the missiles.
You think Obama is planning on launching cruise missile?

Flashback to 2002: Barack Obama doesn't support a strategy of preemptive strikes when Bush is President

George Bush got authorization from Congress, but State Senator Barack Obama  didn't think a strategy of preemptive strikes set a good precedent. President Obama seems willing to make full use of this precedent now. This must be some more of that Obama evolution thing.

Zoom to bout the 1:50 mark if you are in a hurry.

It is interesting how closely related the two decisions are. Iraq used chemical weapons against their own people. So, has Syria. WMD is the driving factor in both decisions.

Meet Senator Ted Cruz' secret weapon: His father...

Rafael Cruz is reported to be a powerful speaker...

Via NRO:
The political partnership between Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and his father, Rafael, is a rising force in conservative politics. To most observers, it seems like part of a familial game plan that has been in the works for years.
But according to Senator Cruz, it actually began quite recently with a phone call. “My dad poured himself into my Senate race last year,” he recalls. “In the early months, we didn’t have much of a campaign. One day, I couldn’t make an event, so he drove out to West Texas alone — no staffers, nothing — and he spoke on my behalf. A few hours later, I called and asked how it went. He said, ‘Even surrogates for the other candidates were asking for Cruz yard signs.’”
Ever since, Cruz has kept his father, a 74-year-old pastor, involved with his political shop, using him not merely as a confidant and stand-in, but as a special envoy. He is Cruz’s preferred introductory speaker, his best messenger with evangelicals, and his favorite on-air sidekick — a presence who softens his edge. This past Sunday, the pair sat for a joint CNN interview, one full of aw-shucks asides. Read it all...

Report: Anthony Weiner having to "rent a crowd" to get people to attend his campaign events...

How embarrassing...

Via The NY Post:
Anthony Weiner is having such a hard time generating support for his limp campaign that he has resorted to paying a rent-a-crowd firm to provide “supporters” for his events, The Post has learned.
Some of the gung-ho Weiner crowds, including at the Aug. 11 Dominican Day Parade in Manhattan, were really actors who were paid $15 an hour by the California firm Crowds on Demand, according to a source with direct knowledge of the deal.
The source said surrogates for Weiner approached the Santa Monica-based company days after Indiana-native Sydney Leathers came forward to say that Weiner had continued his digital dalliances after resigning from Congress.

Will the U.S. become “al-Qaeda’s air force?”

Former congressman Dennis Kucinich is asking this question. Sadly, there are no good guys to support in Syria or much of the Middle East.

Via NRO:
Former congressman Dennis Kucinich (D., Ohio) said today that striking Syria would turn the United States military into “al-Qaeda’s air force.”
Kucinich, who voted against the Iraq War and campaigned for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004 and 2008, lambasted the idea that Obama could act without congressional authorization, which he said would be a violation of the Constitution. He also warned that intervening in Syria would entangle the United States in another war in the Middle East and encourage Islamists who are fighting the forces of Syrian president Bashar Assad.
“So what, we’re about to become al-Qaeda’s air force now?” Kucinich sarcastically asked The Hill.
He went on to warn against attempting to “minimize” an intervention by terming it a “targeted strike.” Such a strike, he said, would still constitute an act of war.

Al Jazeera America is not that popular...

I wonder why?

Via TV Newser:
Al Jazeera America launched last week, and we have the ratings from Nielsen Media Research for its first few days.
Not surprisingly given the low-rated channel it replaced (Current TV), and the fact that it lost a few million homes from AT&T before launch (it is currently in just over 40 million homes), AJAM’s launch ratings were pretty low by traditional cable news standards.
The highest rated show on AJAM last week was the Thursday evening edition of “Real Money with Ali Velshi,” which drew 54,000 total viewers.
The 2 PM Saturday edition of “News Live” averaged 48,000 viewers, while “Inside Story” Thursday at 12:30 PM averaged 41,000 viewers. “News Live” Thursday from 12-12:30 averaged 40,000. The debut edition of “The Stream” on Tuesday averaged 38,000 viewers, below Nielsen’s accuracy threshold, while the debut of “America Tonight” averaged 34,000 viewers.

Amusing: Hollywood fleeing Hollywood...

Even liberals in Hollywood like to make more money...

Via Variety
Los Angeles’ new mayor has vowed to help stanch the flow of film and TV production jobs out of Hollywood, starting with the appointment of a film czar at City Hall. But to make a real difference, Eric Garcetti needs to convince skeptical state pols to combat the lure of rich tax incentives from outside California.

Two days after this year’s Oscars, Hollywood’s councilman Eric Garcetti, then running for mayor of Los Angeles, staged a media event at Sunset Gower Studios.

Only a smattering of reporters and photographers showed up, perhaps because the gathering was to address “runaway production,” a buzzword that means little for those outside the industry and, for insiders, is a timeworn term for a chronic, unresolved problem alongside piracy and studio accounting.

But Garcetti, a series of location managers and other crew workers who spoke in late February tried convey a message of urgency: Hollywood’s homegrown industry is being ceded to other states and countries whose favorable tax credits are increasingly luring away movie and television production at an alarming rate. As competition both in the U.S. and abroad continues to grow, the state’s market share and longtime stronghold on production jobs and spending are fast evaporating. More here...

Syria threatens to attack Israel is if attacked for use of chemical weapons...

I would suggest that would be doubling down on stupid...

Via The Times of Israel:
A senior Syrian official on Monday issued a first direct warning that if attacked, his country would retaliate against Israel. Khalaf Muftah, a senior Baath Party official who used to serve as Syria’s assistant information minister, said in a radio interview that Damascus would consider Israel “behind the [Western] aggression and [it] will therefore come under fire.”

“We have strategic weapons and we’re capable of responding,” he said. “Normally the strategic weapons are aimed at Israel.”

Muftah concluded with a warning that “If the US or Israel make the mistake of taking advantage of the chemical issue… the region will go up in flames… that will affect security not only in the region but across the world.”

His words were echoed by Iranian officials, who on Monday shrugged off the threat of a US attack on its close ally Syria, but said that if such a strike were to take place, Israel would suffer.

John "Lurch" Kerry is making the case to attack his "Dear Friend" Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad

Lurch seems to be point man when it comes to making the case for military action against Syria for use of chemical weapons...

Via NBC News:
Hinting at a military response, Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday accused Syria of using chemical weapons against its people, and said President Barack Obama believes “there must be accountability.”
Kerry, using forceful language in a brief statement to reporters, said images that have emerged from Syria in the past week — entire families killed without shedding a drop of blood, bodies contorting in spasms — “shock the conscience of the world.”
The president feels there must be accountability for those who use “the world’s most heinous weapons,” he said.
The secretary added: “Nothing today is more serious, and nothing is receiving more serious scrutiny.”
He spoke hours after a United Nations team investigating claims of a poison-gas attack in a rebel-held suburb of the Syrian capital collected blood samples and interviewed survivors despite being temporarily turned back by sniper fire.
I bet John Kerry wishes he a a do-over on this:
[S]taffers describe their collective cringe when, after a motorcycle ride with Bashar al-Assad, he returned to Washington referring to Bashar as “my dear friend.” Bashar may be a lot of things, but “my dear friend”—an address Kerry used only with a select few, such as the late Ted Kennedy—should not have been one.

Fail: UN inspection team will not be allowed to determine "who" used WMD in Syria...

The team will only be allowed to determine if chemical weapons were used. I wonder why the Syrian government doesn't want the UN to investigate who did it?

Via WSJ:
… On Sunday, the U.N. said its inspection team was preparing to start its fact-finding mission on Monday after Syria said it would allow U.N. personnel now in Damascus immediate access to the affected areas.
“The team must be able to conduct a full, thorough and unimpeded investigation,” said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday night. However, the team is only mandated to determine if chemical weapons were used, not who used them, Mr. Ban’s spokesman said.
Syrian state television, airing a statement attributed to the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said agreement was reached following a meeting between Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and Angela Kane, the U.N. disarmament chief, who arrived in Damascus on Saturday. The Syrian statement said the timing of the visit would be coordinated between the U.N. team led by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom and the Syrian government.
However, it wasn’t clear how the U.N. team would be able to start the work given the continuing military campaign. All areas in question have been sealed off by the military and strenuous restrictions were imposed at checkpoints.

Obama's Justice Department sues to stop Louisiana school vouchers

Liberals don't want to lose control of the indoctrination of your children.

Via Fox News:
The Justice Department is trying to stop a school vouchers program in Louisiana that attempts to help families send their children to independent schools instead of under-performing public schools.
The agency wants to stop the program, led by Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, in any school district that remains under a desegregation court order.
In papers filed in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, the agency said Louisiana distributed vouchers in 2012-13 to roughly 570 public school students in districts that are still under such orders and that “many of those vouchers impeded the desegregation process.”
The federal government argues that allowing students to attend independent schools under the voucher system could create a racial imbalance in public school systems protected by desegregation orders.
Jindal — who last year expanded the program that started in 2008 — said this weekend that the department’s action is “shameful” and said President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder “are trying to keep kids trapped in failing public schools against the wishes of their parents.”

Shameful: NSA employees spied on their lovers...

If you give someone that kind of access and power, someone will abuse it. This is why they should never have access to everyone's emails, phone calls and other electronic information. The NSA should have to get the records from providers on at a time after they get a court order.

Via The Telegraph:
Staff working at America's National Security Agency – the eavesdropping unit that was revealed to have spied on millions of people – have used the technology to spy on their lovers.
The employees even had a code name for the practice – "Love-int" – meaning the gathering of intelligence on their partners.
Dianne Feinstein, a senator who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, said the NSA told her committee about a set of "isolated cases" that have occurred about once a year for the last 10 years. The spying was not within the US, and was carried out when one of the lovers was abroad.
One employee was disciplined for using the NSA's resources to track a former spouse, the Associated Press said.
Don't be surprised when it is later revealed that someone has used their ability to spy for political purposes. Note: Notice they said one employee was disciplined. The term "disciplined" usually doesn't mean fired. I guess the rest who did it, weren't punished at all.

Amusing: NSA spied on den of spies at U.N.

I support this activity of the NSA. They are spying on foreigners who are trying to spy on us.
BERLIN (Reuters) – The U.S. National Security Agency has bugged the United Nations’ New York headquarters, Germany’s Der Spiegel weekly said on Sunday in a report on U.S. spying that could further strain relations between Washington and its allies.
Citing secret U.S. documents obtained by fugitive former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, Der Spiegel said the files showed how the United States systematically spied on other states and institutions.
Der Spiegel said the European Union and the U.N.’s Vienna-based nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), were among those targeted by U.S. intelligence agents.
In the summer of 2012, NSA experts succeeded in getting into the U.N. video conferencing system and cracking its coding system, according one of the documents cited by Der Spiegel.
“The data traffic gives us internal video teleconferences of the United Nations (yay!),” Der Spiegel quoted one document as saying, adding that within three weeks the number of decoded communications rose to 458 from 12.

Liar-in-Chief: Obama claims Obamacare subsidies are for American citizens...

Via Daily Caller:
President Barack Obama told Americans Friday that federal aid is reserved for citizens, even though his deputies have drafted complex regulations to give taxpayer-funded Obamacare subsidies to foreign students and to millions of guest workers.
He made the misleading claim during a televised roundtable at the second stop of his two-day, two-state tour promoting more aid to students.
“Obviously, when it come to federal grants, loans, support, subsidies, that we provide, those are for our citizens,” Obama told a student questioner from the friendly audience of college professors, administrators and students at the Binghamton University in New York.

Real Good News: The The Muslim Brotherhood is losing in Egypt...

In Middle east conflicts. it's hard to find a good guy. One thing is certain, the Muslim Brotherhood are bad guys.
Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat—The Muslim Brotherhood’s attempts to organize protests to demand the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Mursi on Friday ended quietly as the total number of protesters declined markedly from previous weeks.
The small turnout prompted speculations over a drop in the group’s popularity among Egyptians.
Pro-Mursi protests were met with public condemnation across Egypt, and anti-Brotherhood protesters reportedly attacked Islamists and tore down their placards.
Those overseeing the situation in Egypt attributed the small turnout to the absence of communication among Brotherhood members and protest organizers, as well as the heightened security measures.
Beginning in the early hours of Friday, Egypt’s security forces stepped up their preparations near key locations across the country.
“Security forces tightened security in key institutions and squares, so that what happened last week would not be repeated,” a security source told Asharq Al-Awsat.
“The interior ministry does not object to any protest, providing it is peaceful,” the same source added.
Brotherhood supporters scrambled to find a foothold in Cairo after the Friday prayers, but the security forces closed off the Tahrir and Ramses squares, as well as Rabaa Al-Adawiya, the former Brotherhood stronghold.
The military seem to realize they are winning. they are easing the curfew.
AFP - Egypt is to shorten its night-time curfew by two hours, pushing back the start time to 9:00 pm (1900 GMT) except on Fridays, the premier's office said on Saturday.

Obama administration will push Keystone XL Pipeline deciaion until after the 2014 midterms?

Wouldn't surprise me...

Via National Journal:
The State Department’s Office of Inspector General announced Friday it does not expect to release the results of an investigation into a possible conflict of interest in the department’s Keystone XL pipeline review until January—a move that could delay a final decision on the project until next year.
Earlier this month, the OIG began an inquiry into allegations made by the Sierra Club and other environmental groups that Environmental Resources Management, a consulting firm hired to produce the draft environmental impact statement for the pipeline, had ties to TransCanada Corp. and the American Petroleum Institute, two organizations with a key stake in the project. …
The conflict-of-interest inquiry and the State Department’s review of the pipeline have been ongoing, and State has not yet said when it will make a final determination on Keystone XL. But Friday’s announcement that the OIG investigation results won’t be released until January makes it likely that a decision on the project will be pushed back to 2014.

War drums: U.S. naval forces moving closer to Syria...

I wonder if Obama's UN masters will ever give him permission to use military force?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. naval forces are moving closer to Syria as President Barack Obama considers military options for responding to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad government. The president emphasized that a quick intervention in the Syrian civil war was problematic, given the international considerations that should precede a military strike.
The White House said the president would meet Saturday with his national security team to consider possible next steps by the United States. Officials say once the facts are clear, Obama will make a decision about how to proceed.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel declined to discuss any specific force movements while saying that Obama had asked the Pentagon to prepare military options for Syria. U.S. defense officials told The Associated Press that the Navy had sent a fourth warship armed with ballistic missiles into the eastern Mediterranean Sea but without immediate orders for any missile launch into Syria.

Obama's DOD training materials identify colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule as extremists...

The training materials used by the Air Force were created to help students “recognize extremists ideologies.” The materials identified conservative values, such as individual liberties and states’ rights, as recruiting rhetoric used by “extremists.”
According to Judicial Watch:
Under a section labeled “Extremist Ideologies” the document states, “In U.S. history, there are many examples of extremist ideologies and movements.  The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule and the Confederate states who sought to secede from the Northern states are just two examples.”

Obama wants to secure the border...in southern Mexico

It's nice to see Obama interested in border security. Now, if we could only get him interested in the US border.

FreeBeacon reports (via Gateway Pundit) the following:
Obama administration and Mexican government officials recently discussed creating a three-tier security system designed to protect Mexico’s southern border from drug and human traffickers, according to U.S. officials.
The border control plan calls for U.S. funding and technical support of three security lines extending more than 100 miles north of Mexico’s border with Guatemala and Belize. The border security system would use sensors and intelligence-gathering to counter human trafficking and drug running from the region, a major source of illegal immigration into the United States.
According to the officials who discussed the U.S.-Mexican talks on condition of anonymity, the Mexican government proposed setting up three security cordons using electronic sensors and other security measures along the southern Mexican border, along a line some 20 miles from the southern border, and along a third security line about 140 miles from the southern Mexican territorial line.
The plan would be funded in part through the Merida Initiative, a U.S.-led anti-drug trafficking program that has involved nearly $2 billion in U.S. funds.
Border security was a major topic during the visit to Mexico last month by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Thomas Winkowski, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Alan Bersin.
Napolitano made no mention of the southern border protection plan after her visit.[...]
A DHS spokesman would not say if southern Mexico border security was discussed during the recent Napolitano visit. He referred questions about the three-tier border security system to the White House.
A White House spokeswoman had no comment and referred questions to DHS and the State Department. A State Department spokeswoman declined to comment.
Mexican Embassy spokesman Ariel Moutsatsos declined to comment.
The plan apparently is being kept secret within the administration over concerns that disclosure would fuel Republican critics of the administration’s record on border security.

89 year old WW2 veteran beaten to death by two teens who might look like Obama's son's if he had one...

George Zimmerman was lucky he was armed or he may have met the same fate. It's a shame Mr. Belton wasn't packing...
(KXLY) — WWII veteran Delbert Belton survived being wounded in action during the Battle of Okinawa only to be beaten and left for dead by two teens at the Eagles Lodge in Spokane on Wednesday evening.
Belton, 89, died from the injuries he suffered in the beating Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
Witnesses say the Belton was in the parking lot of the Eagles Lodge at 6410 N. Lidgerwood, adjacent to the Eagles Ice-A-Rena, around 8 p.m. Wednesday when the two male suspects attacked him.
Belton died from his injuries Thursday at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
“Shorty,” as he was known by his friends at the Eagles Lodge, served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII and was shot in the leg during the Battle of Okinawa. He went on to work at Kaiser Aluminum at the company’s Trentwood plant for more than 30 years.[...]
Spokane police are looking for two male suspects in the attack. They said the suspects are African Americans between 16 and 19 years old.
One suspect was described as heavy set and wearing all black clothing. The other was described as being about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. There was no description of what clothing the second suspect was wearing other than a silk do-rag.
Will Obama do anything about the epidemic of violence by young black males? I guess he and liberals will use this incident to call for more gun control. Oh wait, they didn't shoot Mr. Belton. They beat him to death.

“I trained hundreds of pilots to fly, many of whom Ms. Fonda clapped and cheered as they were shot down,” the former Marine said of the pilots he trained to fly, the local News-Enterprise reported.
“To add to this, I just really think it’s a slap in the face to have a person of treason portray a patriotic lady, Mrs. Reagan,” Mr. Boutwell said. “I just think that is throwing gas on the fire.”
“In life, you’ve got to stand for something, and that’s where I stand,” he added. “It makes me feel that I’m honoring those who died for this country.”

NCAAP handbook promotes “Christian Socialism.”

I remember when being a socialist was considered un-American and a bad thing ...

Via Tony Lee:
The NAACP of North Carolina has created a handbook for clergy to enable them to use Bible verses to promote what has been called “Christian Socialism.”
The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP is a “lead organizer of the Moral Monday rallies,” and Rev. William Barber, who is reportedly an “organizer and frequent keynote speaker,” has often used the handbook to denounce Republicans in North Carolina’s legislature for “trying to move the state backwards” by supporting issues like Voter ID laws, which North Carolina’s governor recently signed into law.
Their rallying slogan is, “Forward together, not one step back” and the tax-exempt organization advocates a brand of “Christian Socialism.” The handbook suggests using a Bible verse that offers “an alternative paradigm for interpersonal and communal engagement that can serve as a critical rejoinder to the policies of our state government.”

Interesting: You may have been beat at a violent video game by a Supreme Court Justice...

Supreme Court justices played violent video games as research for  2010 case concerning California's ban on the sale of violent video games to minors.

From the Associated Press:
Kagan said the justices often turn to their clerks, who are much younger, to help them understand new technologies.
But they also try to learn on their own. In one case, involving violent video games the first year she was on the court, justices who had never played the games before dove in and gave them a try, Kagan said.
“It was kind of hilarious,” she said.
She didn’t say which games they played.
I wonder which game they played? My guess is this:

The longer Obama is in office, the more true this becomes...

Unbelievable Spin: Obama claims at "some point, the government will run out of money"

Obama has run trillion dollar deficits every year he has been in office. We ran out of money a long time ago and are living on credit.

Via Washington Times:
[M]r. Obama, speaking at the State University of New York-Buffalo, said he’ll cap student loan repayments at 10 percent of their future paychecks, but will also take steps to punish students who are attending school on federal grants by doling out the money in chunks to make sure they stay in school.
Mr. Obama said the government and colleges have been in a type of arms race in recent years, with the government boosting its contributions and schools raising their prices.
“So some point, the government will run out of money, which means more and more costs are being loaded on to students and their families,” the president said.

Obamacare navigators will have access to every American's Social Security number, tax form, bank account, and medical records...

There will be no Obamacare navigator background checks? What could possibly go wrong?
HHS will not require background checks or fingerprinting of employees, and a previous criminal conviction – including one for identity theft – does not necessarily disqualify an employee from becoming a navigator.
Navigators and their assistants will have access to the federal data hub, an online nexus containing information from the Department of Health and Human Services and seven federal departments: the IRS, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Defense Department, the Office of Personnel Management, the Veterans Health Administration, and the Peace Corps.

Stupid: Demo Senate Candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes claims Kentuckians need Obamacare because of "doughnut burgers"

Senator Mitch McConnell most amused...

Via CNS News:
Kentucky Secretary of State and Democratic Senate Candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes defended Obamacare, saying three reasons why Kentuckians need affordable health care coverage: a “donut burger, the chili cheese-steak and the covered french fries.”
Speaking at the Kentucky State Fair, Lundergan Grimes was asked by Joe Arnold of WHAS 11 (Louisville) if she agrees with Republicans who say Obamacare hurts senior citizens, and if she would delay the healthcare expansion.
She responded “As I’ve said before, I’m troubled with certain aspects of the Affordable Care Act, but we’re here at the state fair and if there’s three reasons why Kentuckians, especially our seniors, need access to affordable health care coverage. You just have to look over to the right where you see the donut burger, the chili cheese-steak and the covered french fries that are here.”

Hopefully, Grimes will get Obama to come to Kentucky and campaign with her on the merits of Obamacare...

Gallop poll finds unemployment spiking in the last 30 days...

Unemployed men outside a soup kitchen in Chicago, 1931

We have to hope this is a polling anomaly, but Gallop is using a 30,000 adult sample and rolling 30 day average....

Via Breitbart:
Outside of the federal government’s Bureau of Labor statistics, the Gallup polling organization also tracks the nation’s unemployment rate. While the BLS and Gallup findings might not always perfectly align, the trends almost always do and the small statistical differences just haven’t been worthy of note. But now Gallup is showing a sizable 30 day jump in the unemployment rate, from 7.7% on July 21 to 8.9% today.
This is an 18-month high.
At the end of July, the BLS showed a 7.4% unemployment rate, compared to Gallup’s 7.8%. Again, a difference not worthy of note. But Gallup’s upward trend to almost 9% in just the last three weeks is alarming, especially because this is not a poll with a history of wild swings due to statistical anomalies. Gallup’s sample size is  a massive 30,000 adults and the rolling average is taken over a full 30 day period.
Are the effects of Obamacare and excessive government regulations beginning to take a massive toll?

GOP Rep. Kerry Bentivolio: Writing bill to impeach Obama would be a “dream come true”

Rep. Kerry Bentivolio claims there isn't enough evidence yet. I disagree. Obama violates the law and Constitution almost daily.

Via Politico:
Rep. Kerry Bentivolio told constituents at a town hall Monday that it would be a “dream come true” to write a bill to impeach President Barack Obama, but so far he doesn’t have enough evidence.
The Michigan Republican answered a question at a local Republican club meeting in Birmingham on Monday from a woman who asked about impeaching Obama and who will “stop this runaway train that we have in the White House.”
“If I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true,” Bentivolio replied, according to video of the event posted to YouTube on Tuesday.
The congressman said he “can’t stand” Obama, but he respects the office of president.
“I feel your pain, I know. I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him, and I couldn’t stand being there. But because he is president, I have to respect the office, that’s my job,” Bentivolio said.
He told the crowd without evidence of wrongdoing, the person who submits any bill to impeach Obama will be made a “laughingstock” by the press, so he’s consulted with lawyers.
Here are thirteen examples of Obama's lawlessness...
Aug. 14, 2013: The Obama administration delayed the provision in ObamaCare to cap out-of-pocket health care costs, picking and choosing parts of the law to enforce, which is to exceed its authority.
July 17, 2013: The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals joined the federal appeals courts in D.C. and Philadelphia in ruling President Obama’s National Labor Relations Board recess appointments — who by law must be approved by Congress — were unconstitutional. Thus far, the president has ignored the ruling.
July 1, 2013: The Obama administration unilaterally decided to delay the employer mandate provision of ObamaCare for a year, which is to provide information to the feds about the extent of an applicant’s insurance. Never mind that the law states the mandate must go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014 — they are now relying on the “honor system” from applicants to determine if they are qualified for subsidies.
June 25, 2013: The Supreme Court ruled in Shelby County v. Eric Holder that Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act is “unconstitutional” and that “the formula can no longer be used as a basis for subjecting jurisdiction to preclearance.” Instead of complying with the ruling, Holder filed suit to order Texas to submit to preclearance, in defiance of Congress’ authority to legislate and the Supreme Court’s authority to rule on the constitutionality of the law.
June 15, 2012: The Obama administration announced it will stop deporting illegal immigrants under the age of 30 in a “deferred action” policy to circumvent immigration laws. This comes after Congress rejected a similar measure about a year ago. Since then, more than 500,000 illegals have received the deferment and only 20,000 have been rejected. As for the law-abiding applicants who have been waiting in line, well, that’s Obama’s idea of “lawfulness.”
May 20, 2013: A Washington Post article revealed that Fox News reporter James Rosen was investigated by the DOJ, which subpoenaed his phone records and emails in direct contravention of the First Amendment under the pretense of a leak investigation. The other 7 are here...

Amusing: AFL-CIO in Harry Reid's home state upset they can't keep their insurance plan under Obamacare....

You reap what you sow. They supported Harry Reed and Obamacare to the hilt, but it's fun to watch them cry a river...
WHEREAS, for two years we have sought from the Administration and Congress interpretations to the ACA that merely allows us keep the health plans we currently have: nothing more, nothing less. No special treatment. To date, the Administration has postured on proposals to address the problem, but no proposal to date will actually solve the problem. Our health plans only get worse;
WHEREAS, as a result of Administration inaction to fix the problem, the unintended consequences of the ACA will lead to the destruction of the 40 hour work week, higher taxes and force union members onto more costly plans–eventually destroying the Taft-Hartley Funds completely;
WHEREAS, we are only looking to keep the healthcare plans we have. Nothing more. Nothing less. We are not asking for any special treatment, no additions to what is currently provided by our Taft-Hartley Plans, merely to be allowed to keep the plans we have worked hard to secure for the 65 years we have been governed by the Taft-Hartley law; Read more here...

Have pollution controls cause global warming spike?

There seems to be better correlation with this than CO2...

Via WUWT
Pollution controls have contributed to a more transparent atmosphere, thus allowing for “…a staggering increase in surface solar radiation of the order of ∼20% over the last decade.”

A new paper (O’Dowd et al.) from the National University of Ireland presented this summer at the 19th International Conference on Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols suggests that clean air laws put in place in the 1970′s and 80′s have resulted in an increase in sunlight impacting the surface of the Earth, and thus have increased surface temperatures as a result.  In one fell swoop, this can explain why surface temperature dipped in the 1970′s, prompting fears of an ice age, followed by concerns of global warming as the air got cleaner after pollution laws and controls were put in place. Obamacare is causing spouses to lose healthcare coverage...

If you like your spouses insurance, you may not be able to keep it...
United Parcel Service Inc. plans to remove thousands of spouses from its medical plan because they are eligible for coverage elsewhere. The Atlanta-based logistics company points to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as a big reason for the decision, reports Kaiser Health News.
The decision comes as many analysts are downplaying the Affordable Care Act’s effect on companies such as UPS, noting that the move reflects a long-term trend of shrinking corporate medical benefits, Kaiser Health News reports. But UPS repeatedly cites Obamacare to explain the decision, adding fuel to the debate over whether it erodes traditional employer coverage, Kaiser says.
Rising medical costs, “combined with the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of health care benefits to our employees at an affordable cost,” UPS said in a memo to employees.

Interesting: Brick and mortar stores becoming cheaper than Amazon...

Well, at least on is...

Via WSJ:
At least one store, that is. Prices at Bed Bath & BeyondBBBY +1.50% were on average 6.5% less than at Amazon for a basket of 30 items chosen by analysts at BB&TBBT +0.42% for one of their periodic pricing studies comparing the retailers. “We are becoming increasingly concerned Bed Bath & Beyond is sacrificing gross margin in order to drive top-line growth,” BB&T said — that is, increasingly concerned that Bed Bath & Beyond is starting to behave more like Amazon.
One big factor helping Bed Bath & Beyond are the 20% off coupons it regularly sends to its customers. Once you adjust for those, the price gap widens out to 25%.
But even without the coupons, Bed Bath & Beyond is cheaper than Amazon for many items, sometimes considerably so. This shower curtain, for example, is $24.99 at the former and $32.39 at the latter — a 23% difference before any coupons are taken into account.

Change: Crusading site Groklaw is shutting down over concerns about privacy and government surveillance...

See what Obama hath wrought?
Citing concerns about privacy and government surveillance, Pamela Jones is shutting down her site Groklaw, which for years took on what she and vocal fans saw as wrongheaded legal action in the tech domain.
"There is now no shield from forced exposure," Jones said in final blog post Tuesday. Groklaw depended on collaboration over e-mail, "and there is now no private way, evidently, to collaborate."
Jones, a paralegal, started her site a decade ago taking on the SCO Group's legal attack on IBM and others involving Linux and Unix intellectual property. She rebutted the company's position, detailed the arcana of the lawsuit proceedings, and shared legal filings on which the case rested. Volunteers attended some hearings in person, and collaborative efforts found just any hole that could be poked in SCO's case. The site archives show hundreds of posts since its start in May 2003.
As SCO's case fizzled, Groklaw
What really amuses me is seeing all the liberal talking heads have to defend NSA spying on ordinary Americans and violating their privacy and constitutional rights.

Is Obama planning to have Portuguese for dinner?

Obama has a second dog. It's a Portuguese Water Dog.

Via Politico:
Sunny, welcome to Washington.
The White House revealed Monday that first  dog Bo has been joined by another Portuguese Water Dog, this one named Sunny. Bo was adopted in 2009, shortly after the Obamas moved into the White House.
From the official post:
“Sunny was born in Michigan in June 2012, and arrived at the White House today. Just like Bo, she’s a Portuguese Water Dog, which works great for the Obamas because of allergies in their family. Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo – full of energy and very affectionate – and the First Family picked her name because it fit her cheerful personality.”

Sen. Ted Cruz will renounce his Canadian citizenship...

Did Obama ever renounce his British and Kenyan citizenship? How about his Indonesian citizenship?

Via WaPo:
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced Monday evening that he will renounce his Canadian citizenship, less than 24 hours after a newspaper pointed out that the Canadian-born senator likely maintains dual citizenship.
“Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship,” Cruz said in a statement. “Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.”
The Dallas Morning News wrote in a story posted late Sunday night that Cruz likely remains a Canadian citizen, by virtue of being born there to an American mother. Having never renounced that citizenship, Cruz was technically a Canadian and an American citizen, according to legal experts.
Cruz said his mother told him that he could claim his citizenship if he ever wanted to, but that he never pursued it and thought the matter was settled.
Legal experts say that Cruz is a Canadian citizen regardless of whether he asked for it or not.
“Because I was a U.S. citizen at birth, because I left Calgary when I was 4 and have lived my entire life since then in the U.S., and because I have never taken affirmative steps to claim Canadian citizenship, I assumed that was the end of the matter,” Cruz said.
Cruz, who released his birth certificate as part of the Morning News story, accused the media of focusing on trivial issues.
