2006 Obama: "Raising the debt ceiling (Bush) shows a failure of leadership," 2009 Obama: We need to raise the debt ceiling

President Obama's Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner asked Congress to increase the $12.1 trillion debt limit on Friday, Geithner said it is "critically important" that they act in the next two months. The Hill points out Senator Obama had a poor view of President Bush when he made the same request in 2006. Sen. Obama accused Bush of a "failure of leadership." Well, right back at you Mr. president.

From The Hill:

“Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren,” Obama said in a 2006 floor speech that preceded a Senate vote to extend the debt limit. “America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership.”

Obama later joined his Democratic colleagues in voting en bloc against raising the debt increase.

  1. You failed to mention that Senator Obama's comment in 2006 came as George W. Bush was raising the debt limit for the 4th time in 4 years. Also, that George W. Bush raised the debt limit 7 times in the eight years he was in office; June 2002, May 2003, Nov 2004, March 2006, Sept 2007, July 2008 and Oct 2008. Having entered office in 2001 with a National Debt of $5.95 Trillion George W. Bush left office in 2009 with the National Debt at $10.6 Trillion, almost doubling the debt during his presidency, after having entered office in 2001 with a budget surplus. George W. Bush has created a spiral of increasing debt that no one can be, rationally, expected to stop after only 9 months in office.

  2. I totally agree with the previous
comment. GWB raised the debt ceiling 7 times and no protest from the tea party. Ombama does it once and they want to protest in the streets. It's amazing how the patriots are less patriotic when their party is in power!

Come on Ladybird, the TEA Party didn't exist during Bush's terms.

Walt, so what about how many times Bush raised the debt ceiling. Did Bush ever bad mouth another President about doing it before Bush did it? It's the hypocrisy and duplicity of Obama that is the point.

  5. hypocrisy and duplicity cord? your vocabulary is impressive. i wish i knew big words. maybe you missed the counter point of the debate. GWB refused to raise taxes to fund his enormously expensive and illegitimate war in Iraq and doubled the national debt. He also allowed financial markets to go unregulated and forced his successor to spend money to pull us out of the hole. Had he kept the tax rates and spending of clinton he would have coasted into a surplus that he wouldn't have been responsible for, but Fox would give him credit for.

  6. Hey Libs, BUSH is no longer president !!!! Two wrongs don't make a right. Sorry Congress gave us a balanced budget and surplus Billy had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the oval office to sign it. Remember they almost shut down the government then to get it done.
Iraq was a threat to the world and is justified. Your people signed the papers to send us to war based on info from Clinton's Intel and all the other Libs on the committees.
So why aren't you mentioning current events ??? Like the One Billion we have spent on bombing women and children in Libya ??? Or how Obama has raised the debt more than all the past presidents in just a little over two years.
I do have to agree with him on one thing, we are here because of a lack of leadership.
You're freaking hypocrites and living in the past. Tell your idiot president to suck it up and take it like a man. No more hissy fits and foot stomping and then go and say we need to man up. What a joke this man has been.
