Former Constitutional Law Professor Barack Obama Confuses Declaration of Independence With Constitution


Former constitutional law professor and now President Barack Obama doesn't know the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. During his State of the Union address, President Obama attributed "the notion that we are all created equal" to the Constitution. This is actually part of the Declaration of Independence. We have to wonder if Obama read his lectures at the University of Chicago Law School from a teleprompter.

Modern Conservative reported:
One would hope the President of the United States would know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. But in last night's State of the Union Address, President Obama said:
We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal….

Um, wrong founding document, Mr. President...

It requires a suspension of disbelief -- or a profoundly poor understanding of the Constitution -- to think that "the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it; that if you adhere to our common values you should be treated no different than anyone else" somehow isn't "enshrined in our Constitution".

But that's not what this post really is, of course. It's simply a pitiably shallow and thoroughly puerile attempt at slamming the President at any cost -- even if that cost is to your credibility, as it is in this case.

Certainly, many rights are enshrined in the Constitution, but it is the Declaration of Independence that says "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal," Obama should know that. Of course, liberals don't care what the Constitution says literally. They think they can interrupt it to mean anything that suits their agenda. Also, liberals were unrelenting in their criticism of President Bush for the slightest errors. http://liberalvaluesblog.com/?p=2492

I'm not sure what fictional account of the SOTU you've read or which one you watched. But as is abundantly evident from the full quote, and not the rhetorically advantageous (if not outright dishonest) snippet thereof that your claim and that of the article you cite is based on, at no point did President Obama use the direct quotation that you inexplicably appear to believe he did.

"The notion that we are all created equal" was listed by the President as one of several ideals, all of which are very clearly -- and by your own admission -- "enshrined in the Constitution."

This is just one more example of the petty childishness that now so pervades so much of the so-called conservative "movement" and the kind of pitiful cheapness that I, myself a life-long conservative, find myself embarrassed and disgusted by. And the simple fact that you cite liberals' equivalently callow, pathetic, and intellectually bankrupt criticisms of President Bush's verbal missteps as somehow being a justification for or defense of this pitifully cowardly and utterly meaningless excuse for a charge against the President simply confirms my distaste and comes as no surprise.

Much -- if perhaps not most -- of this blog is of much, much higher quality and much more intellectually legitimate. This bit of sniveling petulance, however, is as ridiculous as it is shameful, and it's my view that you'd be well served to retract and/or apologize for it and its obvious deficiency.

Hey All,

Well I would think that someone who taught Constitutional Law would know the difference between the two Documents.

Maybe I'm asking too much of our President, he has too much on his plate to even worry about what the Constitution says.

It's just an outdated piece of paper anyway.

Obama lied so much in his SOTU speech.

He said that the "stimulus" bill had "saved or created" 2 million jobs. What a joke.

Obama said that "green" jobs were going to China. I'm thinking that the Chinese aren't too concerned about the environment, so how can he say that?

Obama said he was going to "freeze" spending next year. What he didn't mention is that the budget INCREASED by 8% in 2009 and another 8% in 2010, and that money doesn't include the "stimulus" bill.

Obama said that the American people want health care reform, but poll after poll proves him wrong.

Being so dead set on putting our Country in to bankruptcy, and taking over 1/6th of our economy, he hasn't got any time to worry about what is in the Constitution.

In no way does pointing out that the charge leveled in this article is nonsensical, dishonest tripe constitute "sticking up" for anyone or anything -- other than mature, adult-level, fact-based dialogue. It is clear as day that the premise of the original post is based on a dishonest and incomplete parsing of a partial quote, and that is and always will be an act of ribald intellectual cowardice whoever the target of it may be: Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, or otherwise. President Obama's State of the Union address is rife with opportunities for legitimate, factual, substantive criticism, and that the author apparently considers this to be worth mentioning in that context is telling. And disappointingly cheap.

It is worth noting -- again -- that at no point have you or the author of this article refuted my point on its merits, and have instead engaged in simplistic ad hominems. And a more authoritative indication that I'm fully correct in my assertion, I'm not sure I could not envision.

And the fact that you believe my criticism of this revanchist, rhetorically pitiful, and childishly uninformed junk-punditry is somehow violative of the tenets of your version of "conservatism" and/or that it disqualifies me from being a Conservative simply confirms my suspicion that this blog is doing a fine job of catering to the lowest common denominator. The pitiably low-brow "If you don't agree with everything we say and all the tactics we use, no matter how dishonest, then you must disagree with all of it!" excuse for political rhetoric paints the perfect picture of the brain-dead ideologue, the self-important dilettante, addicted to and interested in nothing other than intellectually self-gratifying meaninglessness.

Consequently, I couldn't be more pleased to see it acknowledged in public that my criticism above means I'm not one of that kind. Because though I am in fact most certainly a conservative, I am also most certainly not at all a member of that particularly loathsome club.
