Flashback: Komen canceled many events in 2013; citing 37% drop in participation...

Komen canceled many events in 2013; citing 37% drop in participation. They blamed it on the economy, but much of the backlash is likely from abortion opponents who are disappointed with Komen's decision to continue funding Planned Parenthood. Komen made a serious mistake in caving to liberal's demands. Conservative give much more to charity.
"Participation levels over the last four years have made it difficult to sustain an event of this magnitude in 14 cities."
Komen spokeswoman Andrea Rader said the events had seen a 37% decline over the last four years but acknowledged that the drop was "a little more dramatic" last year.
Following the February 2012 outcry over the group's decision to cut its contributions to Planned Parenthood, which provides a range of health services to women including abortion, Komen reversed its decision.
Ms Rader said the "vast majority" of people had moved on from the controversy.
"There are some folks who will never be back and we know that, and we hope that they will support breast cancer charities because the work's important," she said.

Participation on Komen 'Race for the Cure' events down as much as on third

There is anger on both sides of this issue. Conservatives are angry Komen was, and still is, funding Planned Parenthood. Liberals are angry Komen planned to defunded Planned Parenthood before flip-flopping on the issue. Komen is faced with a serious participation decline nationwide.
With less than a week to go before the race, team participation is lagging, with 600 teams signed up for the local event compared with last year's 700. Race officials declined to reveal how many individuals have registered. Last year, there were 30,500 paid participants.

"We are hoping for comparable numbers or better, but we know we face some challenges," said Maureen Meldrum, Komen Detroit executive director.[...]

Some recent Race for the Cure events have reported a decline in the number of participants. Lansing's race last month was down 28%. Boise, Idaho, fell 37%. Salt Lake City was down 25%.

Throw away the pink ribbons: Komen for the Cure has resumed funding for Planned Parenthood

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has made their choice. They hoped to do it quietly and go unnoticed, but that plan has failed. It's now time for you to make your choice. I have made mine and will no longer contribute to Komen.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure has quietly resumed funding for Planned Parenthood, two months after the leading U.S. breast cancer charity set off an angry and debilitating debate about abortion rights by cutting off funds to the prominent women's health network.

The Dallas-based Komen foundation said on Friday that its local chapters have awarded grants to at least 17 Planned Parenthood affiliates for breast-cancer screenings and breast-health services for the fiscal year that began on April 1.

The grants are comparable in number and dollar value to what Planned Parenthood received last year, when $680,000 in Komen funds helped about 170,000 women, many of them living on low incomes in areas with few healthcare options.

Komen Caves: Will Fund Planned Parenthood

At least VP Joe Biden can have his pink-ribbon harvest peach yogurt again.

Shameful cave:
We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.
The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.
Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.
Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.
It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics – anyone’s politics.
