In 2009, President Barack Obama criticized Doctors for running up medical bills by taking out the tonsils of kids with sore throats. When he got a sore throat, he took a motorcade to Walter Reed and got a CT scan and fiber optic check. Obama was diagnosed with acid reflux. Most people with acid reflux just go down to the drug store and buy an over the counter medication. It seems controlling medical costs is for the little people.

Dolphin bite? There's a medical code for that?
I wonder if there is a code for this:
Coming soon to a doctor's office near you...
(NPR)- Poking fun at a complex new system for classification of diseases is surprisingly easy and enjoyable.
Yes, there are codes your doctor will be able to use someday to submit bills for treatment of a dolphin bite (W5601XA), being struck by a dolphin (W5602XA) or "other contact" with a dolphin (W5603XA). And that's just the start.
Thousands of detailed codes form the backbone of a billing system that the federal government has been seeking to modernize for a while. The U.S., unlike other countries, is still using old codes.
But it's going to take a while longer before things change. The Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday it's delaying implementation of the ICD-10, short for International Classification of Disease, 10th Revision.
Many doctors had raised a ruckus about the inconvenience and expense of switching to ICD-10 when so many other things are changing in health care.
The regulations requiring the move were published three years ago, and were set to take effect in Oct. 2013, two years later than originally planned. Keep on reading...

21-year-old emerges from coma as doctors prepare to part him out
File this under: Do not always trust your doctors.

Via Yahoo News:
Sam Schmid, an Arizona college student believed to be brain dead and poised to be an organ donor, miraculously recovered just hours before doctors were considering taking him off life support.
Schmid, a junior and business major at the University of Arizona, was critically wounded in an Oct. 19 five-car accident in Tucson. The 21-year-old's brain injuries were so severe that the local hospital could not treat him. He was airlifted to the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Phoenix, where specialists performed surgery for a life-threatening aneurysm.
As hospital officials began palliative care and broached the subject of organ donation with his family, Schmid began to respond, holding up two fingers on command. Today he is walking with the aid of a walker, and his speech, although slow, has improved.
Doctors say he will likely have a complete recovery. He even hopes to get a day pass from the hospital to celebrate the holidays with his large extended family.

Stupid: Incurable cancer patient evicted from Denmark hospital room to treat broken-armed NATO Secretary-General
And the European's medical system is better than ours in what way?
(POLITIKAN)- NATO’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was admitted to Denmark’s national university hospital Rigshospitalet this week for an arm fracture operation, but his admission caused the hospital to relegate an incurable cancer patient from her single-bed ward to an office.
Susanne Larsen, 44, who is suffering from incurable bone marrow cancer and has had to have implants to help her manage a collapsed back, was being treated in a single-bed ward - until NATO’s Secretary-General arrived for treatment for a fractured arm, according to Ekstra Bladet.
Fogh Rasmussen fractured his arm last week after falling off his bicycle during a bicycle ride in Brussels.
To accommodate NATO’s Secretary-General, hospital staff removed Larsen to a windowless office without an emergency alarm. Staff told her that if she needed attention she should bang on a teacup with a spoon.

Obamacare Will Give Thousands of Government Bureaucrats Access to Your Private Medical Records

Remember what happened to Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as "Joe the Plumber," after he asked candidate Barack Obama a tough question? Obama supporters in the Ohio state government searched his records and leaked embarrassing details to the press. Do you want this to be possible with your private medical records?
From the Washington Times:
Privacy rights are under threat in the House's government health care plan. While plowing through the more than 1,000-page Democratic House bill, Declan McCullagh of CBS News uncovered provisions that would allow startling privacy intrusions. The innermost secrets of people's personal lives would be made available to thousands of government bureaucrats.
Section 431(a) requires the Internal Revenue Service to give detailed taxpayer information to the new health choices commissioner and state health programs.
The Social Security Administration also could obtain whatever individual income-tax information it deemed relevant to determine people's eligibility for a "low-income prescription drug subsidy" even if the individual had not applied for it.

Your medical marijuana is safe from Feds(video)
Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder is changing the federal policy for medical marijuana. The federal government will not target medical marijuana distributors anymore. I foresee a large rush to the family doctor's office after this knowledge becomes widespread.
Holder signals a shift in marijuana policy(video)
The top U.S. Lawyer, Eric Holder, has signaled a change on medical marijuana policy, saying federal agents will target marijuana distributors only when they violate both federal and state law.
