LONDON – The British government is urging school leaders to use their “common law powers” to search student lunches and potentially confiscate any items they deem “unhealthy or inappropriate.”
Education minister Lord Nash tells Express, “Schools have common law powers to search pupils, with their consent, for items.
“There is nothing to prevent schools from having a policy of inspecting lunch boxes for food items that are prohibited under their school food policies.
“A member of staff may confiscate, keep or destroy such items found as a result of the search if it is reasonable to do so in the circumstances.”
The government’s foray into lunch inspections began when Cherry Tree Primary School in Colchester banned a Peperami sausage snack and scotch eggs from a six-year-old girl’s lunch.

Change: School children resort to selling contraband salt, pepper and sugar at lunch
Michelle Obama needs to leave the school kids lunches alone...

School lunches are so bland that kids are selling salt and pepper to spice them up, a school official told lawmakers Wednesday.
This “contraband economy” is result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act Of 2010, said John Payne, a school board president in Indiana.
The 2010 bill directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create national standards for food served and sold in schools, which included limits on what could be served and how much, as well as a maximum amount of calories that can be included in school meals.
Payne, president of the Blackford County School Board in Hartford City, Ind., told House lawmakers that students in his school district have been “caught bringing in — and even selling — salt, pepper and sugar in school to add taste to perceived bland and tasteless cafeteria food.”

The kids disagree...
Via Breitbart:
As part of her European tour to promote “Let’s Move,” First Lady Michelle Obama boasted during a visit to Milan that American school children were eating better, thanks to her fight against obesity.
“We’ve gotten schools involved so we’re eating better lunches in our schools in the United States, thank goodness,” she said.
Obama made her comments during a visit to the Milan Expo 2015 at a cooking event held by Chef John Besh.
The First Lady didn’t mention any of the multitude of reports from children complaining about lunchroom changes as a result of the federal nutrition mandates she supported.

Interesting: "Flamin' Hot Cheetos" fit Obama administration "Smart Snack" guidelines...
Change: Cheetos reformulated "Flamin' Hot Cheetos" to fit Obama administration "Smart Snack" guidelines. I doubt this is what school lunch Nazi Michelle Obama had in mind.
Yet it turns out that those fiery Cheetos beloved by school children (some kids even made an epic rap paean to Hot Cheetos a few years ago) actually qualify as a "Smart Snack" under revised federal nutrition guidelines for schools.
The Obama administration rolled out the new guidelines last year in a bid to limit the amount of junk food kids eat in school, but nearly half of all U.S. states have formally rejected the standards as too strict. Some legislators think the rules make it too hard for schools to raise money through snack sales at vending machines.
But at Chicago's Whitney Young High School, Flamin' Hot Cheetos remain among the most popular snacks sold. "They're good, like, they just taste delicious," says Cashari Norwood, a junior at the school. "And like, I'm a vegetarian and so sometimes, I just want to eat something that's good, and I can't even really get that here."
These aren't just any Flamin' Hot Cheetos. They're a reformulated version with less fat, less salt and more whole grains. But is that really what the scientists at the Institute of Medicine had in mind when they wrote the recommendations that would become the Smart Snack rules?

School officials resort to giving away prizes to get kids to eat Michelle Obama's crappy lunches...

The House GOP voted to fund Michelle Obama's crappy lunch program for almost another year. Way to go guys and gals.

School officials in Jefferson County, Colorado felt like they had to do something to save the school’s lunch program after a significant drop in participation last year because of new federal regulations championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.
So, they’re bribing kids to buy lunch.
Devinny Elementary School first grader Anna Ketzer was one of three students who won a brand new bicycle, 9News.com reports.
“I was very excited to hear that,” she told the news station, adding that she gets her food from the cafeteria because “I don’t have to make my lunch.”
Her prize comes from Jeffco Public Schools’ new “Hungry to Win” raffle for students who buy their lunch at school. After a 6 percent decline in lunch sales last year, district officials came up with the promotion to bring students back to the lunch room. With each lunch they buy, students are entered to win a range of prizes, from jump ropes, kites, iTunes gift cards or movie tickets, to grand prizes like bicycles and iPods, according to the news site.
“With all the new regulations and the changes that we’ve made, our lunch participation has gone down,” lunch facilitator Lori Burris told 9News. “So, this was to be an incentive to try school lunch and bring them back.”[…]
