Your Tax Dollars At Work: $509,840 To Text "Gay Lingo" To Gay Meth Addicts...

You can't make stuff this stupid up.
(CNSNews.com) – A $509,840 grant by the National Institutes of Health will pay for a study that will send text messages in "gay lingo" to methamphetamine addicts to try to persuade them to use fewer drugs and more condoms. The study began in February.

Lead researcher Dr. Cathy Reback of the Baltimore-based Friends Research Institute, Inc., told CNSNews.com how she and her team of health educators will spend the next four years and over half a million dollars encouraging gay meth addicts to cut down on unprotected sex by periodically sending them “gay-specific” text messages.

"We did a pilot about four, five years ago with 52 out-of-treatment MSM (males who have sex with males)," Dr. Reback explained. "And we sent them text messages that were gay specific - used gay lingo - and made references to the connection between high-risk sex and methamphetamine use among MSM."

Amusing: 2010 Moscow suicide bomber prematurely detonated by spam text...

Today's feel good story...
An Islamic terrorist bomb plot to cause carnage on Moscow's Red Square was thwarted by a spam text message, a court heard today.

Ilyas Saidov was jailed for 15 years for organising the attack in which two women suicide bombers were supposed to wear explosive belts to be detonated by a mobile phone call.

But just hours before they were to strike on New Year's Eve 2010, one belt exploded after the detonator was activated by a spam text, killing one of the women and prompting the arrest of the other. She was sentenced to 10 years in jail in May.

Spam is a daily nuisance for many Russians buying new SIM cards but this time the message saved thousands from being in harm's way. Red Square is a popular gathering point for Muscovites to see in the new year.

Divorce Via Text Message in Dubai

1 in 4 divorces in Dubai are by text message. Islamic law allows a man to divorce his wife by saying "I divorce you" three times.

Markedmanner reported:
Dubai recorded 555 divorce cases among its Muslim population in 2010 and 150 of them were done by e-mail of mobile phone text messages.
While some experts consider a divorce through such means is legal, others believe it is not legitimate or final under Islamic law on the grounds spouses could fake such a divorce for some reasons.
Under Islamic law, a Muslim man can divorce his wife by just saying “your are divorced” three times but a woman cannot do the same.
“Dubai had 555 divorce cases in 2010, including 150 divorces through electronic means such as mobile phone texts,” the Arabic language daily ‘Emarat Al Youm’ said, citing figures by the Dubai family consultative council.
It quoted Mohammed Abdul Rahman, head of the personal affairs division at Dubai’s courts, as saying e-divorces are legal but must be proved at court.
