Obvious: New study finds more people will survive a Tsunami if the walk faster to high ground...

I hope taxpayers didn't help fund this, but I am likely wrong.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - About 5,500 more people could survive a major tsunami hitting the Pacific Northwest if they just walk a little faster to higher ground after roads are knocked out, a new study shows.
The report published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences looked at 73 communities along 700 miles of coastline in Oregon, Washington and Northern California. The area is considered most at risk from the next major earthquake and tsunami in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, where two plates of the Earth's crust come together miles off the coast.
Emergency preparedness experts generally agree that after the quake and tsunami, most roads will be too damaged for driving, so people will have to walk to safety.
Geographers estimated 21,562 residents would not make it to safety if they walk slowly - at about 2.5 mph. But if they walk faster, at about 3.5 mph, the death toll drops to 15,970. About 70 percent of them would be in Washington, nearly 30 percent in Oregon and only 4 percent in California.
The study said people working or staying at motels in the tsunami area also will be at risk, but it didn't say how many. It also noted where communities have dependent-care facilities, where residents might have trouble walking.
Lead author Nathan Wood, a geographer for the U.S. Geological Survey in Portland, Oregon, said the findings show tsunami risks are a public health issue as well as an emergency preparedness issue. Promoting healthy lifestyles that help people walk faster would save lives. Read it all.
In their next study, they are going to see if people who are starving to death could live longer if they ate more. /snark

Toyota Goes Back To Work In Japan

The Toyota Way

Of the Japanese, Toyota was hardest hit by the Tsunami. Honda and Ni8ssan were second. Toyota has the most plants in the affected zone. Plus, Japanese auto-parts plants tend to closely surround the auto-manufacturer they are supplying. This week, Toyota will resume production in all plants. They may still suffer from reduced production due to lack of certain parts or rolling blackouts due to electricity shortage.

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. resumed car production at all of its plants in Japan Monday for the first time since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, but said the factories will run at half capacity due to parts shortages.

The world’s No. 1 automaker said it was still struggling to secure around 150 types of auto parts. The magnitude-9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami destroyed parts factories in northeastern Japan, causing severe shortages of components.

Over $1 billion has been collected, by the Japanese Red Cross, in the first three weeks after Japan's epic disaster, but no funds have been directly given to victims yet.
Japan's Red Cross has collected more than $1 billion in the first three weeks after the massive earthquake and tsunami but has yet to distribute any funds directly to victims, prompting Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano to urge Sunday that the process be accelerated.

Japan should expect new tsunami and large quake within days

Australian seismological expert says Japan should expect a huge aftershock and tsunami withing the next two days.
NORTH-EASTERN Japan can expect another monster earthquake large enough to trigger a tsunami within days, the head of the Australian Seismological Centre says.

The director, Kevin McCue, said there had been more than 100 smaller quakes since Friday, but a larger aftershock was likely.

”Normally they happen within days,” he said. ”The rule of thumb is that you would expect the main aftershock to be one magnitude smaller than the main shock, so you would be expecting a 7.9.

”That’s a monster again in its own right that is capable of producing a tsunami and more damage.”

Global Warming Advocates Link Japan Earthquake to Climate Change

Danny Glover blamed the Haitian earthquake on global warming. Now, the President of the European Economic and Social Committee seems to be trying to link the Japan earthquake and tsunami with climate change.
The earthquake and tsunami will clearly have a severe impact on the economic and social activities of the region. Some islands affected by climate change have been hit. Has not the time come to demonstrate on solidarity – not least solidarity in combating and adapting to climate change and global warming? Mother Nature has again given us a sign that that is what we need to do.
Earth quakes are caused by tectonic plate movements. They are a geological feature not a climate feature.

Interesting Graphic of the Day

The Tsunami that swept Democrats out of control of the House and loosened their control on the Senate was deep. Take a look at this map of post-election partisan composition of State Legislatures. The gains are historic.

Via NCSL:

Republicans have added over 675 seats to their ranks in this election, dramatically surpassing 1994 gains. This number could go even higher as the tallies in the undecided races are determined. The chamber switches thus far are all Democratic to Republican except for Montana House which was tied and is now Republican, and the Oregon House which was Democratic and is now tied.

The Republican Tsunami Builds

The latest NPR Battleground survey has found 86 Republican candidates are either tied or ahead of their democratic opponent in democrat-held districts.

The Hill reported:

Republicans maintain an edge over Democrats in some of the most highly contested congressional districts, a new poll found Friday.

GOP candidates have a four-point edge among likely voters in the 53 most competitive congressional districts held by Democrats, and they’re tied with Democrats in an additional 33 seats that make up a group of the next-most-competitive Democratic-held seats, the new NPR Battleground Survey found.
