North Korea has the hydrogen bomb?
Add this to Obama's accomplishments...
Via Gizmodo:
Via Gizmodo:
The US Geological Survey has noted seismic activity—a magnitude 5.1 earthquake—near a known North Korean nuclear test center. The last time this happened, it was thanks to the underground detonation of a nuclear device.
North Korea has yet to issue a statement on the event, so for the time being, the USGS report is all there is to go on: a magnitude 5.1 earthquake was logged 12 miles northeast of Sungjibaegam at about 8:30 p.m. ET.
In 2013, the USGS recorded another 5.1 earthquake in the same place. That turned out to be caused by an underground nuclear test, so it’s not much of a leap to assume the same trigger for today’s event.

North Korea threatens strikes on "the whole U.S. mainland, that cesspool of terrorism."
This would be amusing is North Korea didn't have nuclear weapons. Unless something changes fast, we will be in the same boat with Iran soon.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- President Barack Obama is "recklessly" spreading rumors of a Pyongyang-orchestrated cyberattack of Sony Pictures, North Korea says, as it warns of strikes against the White House, Pentagon and "the whole U.S. mainland, that cesspool of terrorism."Such rhetoric is routine from North Korea's massive propaganda machine during times of high tension with Washington. But a long statement from the powerful National Defense Commission late Sunday also underscores Pyongyang's sensitivity at a movie whose plot focuses on the assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un, who is the beneficiary of a decades-long cult of personality built around his family dynasty.

Sony bows down to North Korea...
This a sad day for the motion picture industry and all of America.
Via Variety:
Via Variety:
With theater chains defecting en masse, Sony Pictures Entertainment has pulled the planned Christmas Day release of “The Interview.”
In announcing the decision to cancel the holiday debut, Sony hit back at the hackers who threatened movie theaters and moviegoers and who have terrorized the studio and its employees for weeks.
“Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like,” the statement reads.
“We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public,” it continues. “We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.”
The studio did not say it would never release the picture theatrically. Insiders tell Variety that Sony is exploring all options, including offering the picture on premium video-on-demand as a way to recoup at least some of its investment.

Live in North Korea? Is your name Kim Jong Un? You need to change that...
I wonder if the penalty for refusing is a forced labor camp or getting fed to hungry dogs?

Kim Jong Un, North Korea's young dictator, sits at the top of a nation that for decades has enshrined the ruling Kim dynasty as demigods. [...]
It also leads to whole ranks of the population having to surrender their names.
According to a new report on a South Korean TV station, North Korean authorities issued a directive in 2011 — when Kim Jong Un came to power after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il — to reject birth certificates of newborns named Kim Jong Un and to revise the official documentation and identity cards of those who still had that name.
“All party organs and public security authorities should make a list of residents named Kim Jong Un … and train them to voluntarily change their names,” read the document, which was revealed by the KBS TV station on Tuesday.

A senior North Korean military official on Sunday threatened to launch a nuclear strike on the White House and Pentagon, according to Agence France-Presse.
“If the US imperialists threaten our sovereignty and survival… our troops will fire our nuclear-armed rockets at the White House and the Pentagon — the sources of all evil,” Hwang Pyong-So said in a speech in Pyongyang during a military rally.

North Korea has their panties in a bunch over a new movie that lampoons their leader...
Watch a trailer for “The Interview.” It is embedded above.
Via Daily Mail:
North Korea has denounced Seth Rogen and James Franco as ‘terrorists’ in a stern letter to the UN Secretary General over their new comedy which lampoons its leader.
The secretive regime lodged a formal protest over The Interview, a farcical story of tabloid journalists hired by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong Un.
It stars Rogen and Franco as the two television reporters who turn assassin after landing an interview with Kim in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.
The North Korean Foreign Ministry had previously warned the U.S. of ‘stern’ and ‘merciless’ retaliation if it fails to block the release of the film, which is out on October 14.
Now, in a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, North Korea’s UN envoy Ja Song-Nam says allowing the film to be made and seen constitutes ‘the most undisguised sponsoring of terrorism as well as a war action.’

Japan plans to shoot down next North Korean ballistic missile?
War drums...
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan has ordered a destroyer in the Sea of Japan to strike any ballistic missiles that may be launched by North Korea in the coming weeks after Pyongyang fired a Rodong medium-range missile over the sea, a government source said on Saturday.
Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera issued the order on Thursday, but did not make it public in order to avoid putting a chill on renewed talks between Tokyo and Pyongyang, the first in more than a year, local media reported earlier.
"The defense minister made the order from April 3rd through to the 25th to prepare for any additional missile launches," the source said.
Onodera, the source said, did not deploy Patriot missile batteries that would be the last line of defense against incoming warheads.
Media reports said the North Korean-Japanese talks in Beijing this week broke no new ground, but ended with an agreement for further meetings.

Remember when Bill Clinton made a deal with North Korea to stop their nuclear weapons program?
It seems we have made a deal with Iran that is alleged to stop their nuclear weapon ambitions. This is a good time to remember when Bill Clinton made a similar deal with North Korea. How did that work out for us?
Via LA Times:
Via LA Times:
WASHINGTON — President Clinton on Tuesday approved a deal reached by U.S. negotiators in Geneva to stop North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, saying the agreement “will make the United States, the Korean peninsula and the world safer.”
Clearly delighted by what he considers a victory for his foreign policy, the President appeared before television cameras to hail the agreement as “the first step on the road to a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.” He instructed Special Ambassador Robert L. Gallucci, the Administration’s lead negotiator with North Korea, to sign the accord Friday in Geneva.
However, the White House refused to release the text Tuesday, and Administration officials said that it will not be made public until after it is signed. Instead, Gallucci and other U.S. officials briefed reporters on what they said are its principal elements.
The accord, concluded Monday in Geneva, gives North Korea a series of economic and political benefits in exchange for promises to freeze and eventually dismantle its current nuclear facilities, which the CIA believes have been used to make the material for one to two nuclear weapons.
“The North Koreans do have an interest in a political and economic opening. They do have long-term energy needs. And we are addressing those needs,” Gallucci told reporters at a White House briefing. “They are giving up a nuclear program that posed an enormous risk to South Korea, to Japan, to Northeast Asia and to the international non-proliferation regime.

Interesting: North Korea wants to talk to South Korea about that closing of the Kaesong Industrial Zone...
Considering this industrial zone is North Korea's few sources of foreign currency, it was a really dumb thing to close their cash cow.
Via CNN:
Via CNN:
Pyongyang on Friday reconnected a hotline between the two sides that it had severed amid recent tensions.North Korea set off months of tensions with a long-range rocket launch in December followed by an underground nuclear test in February. The North broke the impasse between the two sides over the Kaesong Industrial Zone -- a shared industrial complex and major symbol of cooperation between the two countries where Pyongyang halted activity in April -- by issuing a proposal on Thursday for talks. It said that "the venue of the talks and the date for their opening can be set to the convenience of the south side."South Korea reacted quickly and positively to the offer, noting that it had been "continuously" seeking talks on Kaesong since the North shut it down.

Attention desperate North Korea moves two more missile launchers to the coast...
If these losers didn't have nukes, there actions would be amusing...
SEOUL — North Korea has moved two more missile launchers to its east coast, where preparations are apparently under way for a missile test as tensions simmer on the peninsula, a report said.
Expectations had been high that Pyongyang would carry out a test to coincide with celebrations marking the birth of North Korea's late founding leader Kim Il-Sung on April 15 but it did not materialise.
The North Korean military last week moved two launchers believed to be for Scud missiles to the northeast province of South Hamgyong, Yonhap news agency said, citing a senior Seoul official.
"We have discovered the North has moved two additional TELs (transporter erector launchers) to the east coast... after April 16," the official was quoted as saying, adding Seoul and Washington were closely monitoring the site.BTW, did Kim Jung Un ever come out of hiding? Before the Boston Marathon terrorist attack, he had been missing from public for over two weeks.

Too good to check: NK Leader Kim Jong Un may have been deposed?

Via IB Times:
Via IB Times:
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has not been seen in public for the past two weeks sparking widespread speculation amid escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula.A more likely explanation is he is hiding somewhere in case the U.S. decided to attack.
Unconfirmed reports which suggested a coup against the leader have been rubbished by experts in Seoul citing no unusual military movement in the country.
Alongside a flurry of threats from North Korea, Kim’s absence has set rumour mills rolling. One question being asked is whether Pyongyang has been forced to tone down its war rhetoric against the US and South Korea.
Kim was last seen in public on 1 April when he headed a parliamentary session. The leader has been missing in action for the last 15 days at a time when the country is set to mark the birth anniversary of his grandfather and former leader of North Korea Kim Il-sung.
It is widely speculated that North Korea will launch a ballistic missile to mark the occasion.A source familiar with matter told the Seoul-based Yonhap news agency that Kim’s absence is a “psychological warfare that could grab attention from South Korea and the United States”. Keep on reading…

War Drums: North Korea Claims Tokyo, Japan Will Be First Nuclear Target...
Kim Jung Un likes to look at things
I believe this is mostly bluster from a very inexperienced NK leader. However, we can't rule out the possibility Kim Jung Un is batsh*t crazy.
Via Express:
NORTH KOREA has warned Japan that Tokyo would be the first target in the event of a war on the Korean Peninsula, as it increased threats of an attack.
In a commentary carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the communist country lashed out at Tokyo’s standing orders to destroy any missile heading toward Japan, threatening such actions will result in a nuclear attack against the island nation.
If Japan executes its threat to shoot down any North Korean missile, such a “provocative” intervention would see Tokyo — an enormous conurbation of 30 million people — “consumed in nuclear flames”, KCNA warned.
“Japan is always in the cross-hairs of our revolutionary army and if Japan makes a slightest move, the spark of war will touch Japan first,” the report added.
An official at Japan’s defence ministry said that the country “will take every possible measure to respond to any scenario”, while the US Secretary of State John Kerry warned that a North Korean missile launch would be a “huge mistake”. [...]

Scary: DIA thinks North Korea can mount a nuke on a missile...
Let's hope and pray this assessment is wrong...
Via Daily Beast:
Via Daily Beast:
North Korea likely has nuclear weapons that can be delivered by ballistic weapons, according to a classified report by the Defense Intelligence Agency. The assessment comes amid escalating rhetoric by Kim Jong-un threatening nuclear strikes on the United States. It’s the clearest statement yet that the boy leader poses a legitimate and imminent nuclear threat.
According to the report, “DIA assesses with moderate confidence the North currently has nuclear weapons capable of delivery by ballistic missiles however the reliability will be low.” That line was read aloud by Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, on Thursday during a House Armed Services Committee hearing. Lamborn was questioning Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who seemed taken aback and declined to answer the question, saying, “I haven’t seen it and you said it’s not publicly released, so I choose not to comment on it.”
The conclusion from the DIA plays into a larger debate within the U.S. intelligence community about North Korea’s ability to launch a nuclear missile. While North Korea has conducted three underground nuclear tests since 2006, the U.S. has been divided for years on whether the country’s engineers can place a nuclear warhead atop a ballistic missile. The DIA report now shows that the military’s most important intelligence agency believes, albeit with “moderate confidence,” that North Korea has mastered the technology.

Interesting: Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro tells North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to chill...
Castro made it into retirement without getting himself killed or Cuba destroyed. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un should take heed to Castro's advice.
Via The Daily Caller:
Via The Daily Caller:
Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro warned North Korea against war on Friday, and said that it is primarily the United States’ responsibility to prevent a conflict from breaking out.
Castro wrote the advice in a column — his first in nine months — for Cuban state media. He spoke as an ally, from one communist regime to another, in the wake of North Korea’s mounting threats of direct war with South Korea and the U.S.
Describing the current tensions in the Korean Peninsula as one of the “gravest risks” of nuclear holocaust since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, Castro urged North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to back away from the brink of war, and consider the harmful repercussions his actions might have on both Koreas and the world.
