Interesting: GOP includes anti-Sharia plank in their official platform

Liberals claim Sharia law is an imaginary threat. If they are correct, a law banning Sharia would hurt nothing. If they are incorrect, we need an anti-Sharia law. Better safe than sorry?

The Republican National Convention adopted an amendment to their platform supporting a ban on foreign law, with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) specifically stating that Sharia posed a threat to America.

"We see it from the top where the United States Supreme Court has repeatedly quoted foreign law in interpreting our U.S. constitution and it's actually coming in at the bottom as well, it's being raised as an argument in courts around the country," Kobach said.

NYT's Op-Ed: Crusade against Sharia undermines American democracy

The cheese has finally completely slipped off the cracker over at the New York Times. America is a nation of one laws. The only exception is treaty obligations to various Indian tribes. Any other set of laws, good or bad, must be rejected. This is especially true for a legal system that proscribes chopping off body parts and stoning women to death for minor moral infractions.

(NYT) — MORE than a dozen American states are considering outlawing aspects of Shariah law. Some of these efforts would curtail Muslims from settling disputes over dietary laws and marriage through religious arbitration, while others would go even further in stigmatizing Islamic life: a bill recently passed by the Tennessee General Assembly equates Shariah with a set of rules that promote “the destruction of the national existence of the United States.”

Supporters of these bills contend that such measures are needed to protect the country against homegrown terrorism and safeguard its Judeo-Christian values. The Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has said that “Shariah is a mortal threat to the survival of freedom in the United States and in the world as we know it.”

This is exactly wrong. The crusade against Shariah undermines American democracy, ignores our country’s successful history of religious tolerance and assimilation, and creates a dangerous divide between America and its fastest-growing religious minority.

Did the NYT's inadvertently admit Muslims are dangerous? What is the nature of this "dangerous divide" they refer to in the op-ed? If we are all governed by one set of laws, how are we divided? I doubt non-Muslim Americans will be rioting if Sharia isn't implemented.

Al Qaeda's proxy in Somalia Whipping Women for Wearing Bras

The Somalian group Al Shabaab, which is an Al Qaeda proxy, is sending gunmen into the streets of Mogadishu to inspect women's breasts and publicly whip them if they are wearing a bra. Wasn't sharia twisted enough already?

A hardline Islamist group in Somalia has begun publicly whipping women for wearing bras that they claim violate Islam as they are 'deceptive'....

Al Shabaab, which seeks to impose a strict interpretation of Sharia law over all Somalia, also amputated a foot and a hand each from two young men accused of robbery earlier this month.

Obama legal pick wants US under international law

In what may be the most controversial pick of his administration, President Obama chose Harold Koh to be the State Department's legal adviser. In that job, Koh would forge a wide range of international agreements. Koh was the Dean of Yale Law School until recently. He believes judges should interpret the Constitution according to other nation's legal "norms." This could apply Sharia law in US courts if other nations adopted it.

Those are the views of the man on track to become one of the US government's top lawyers: Harold Koh.

President Obama has nominated Koh -- until last week the dean of Yale Law School -- to be the State Department's legal adviser. In that job, Koh would forge a wide range of international agreements on issues from trade to arms control, and help represent our country in such places as the United Nations and the International Court of Justice.

Telegraph reports Obama Administration backed the 'Sharia law for peace' deal with Taliban

I hope President Obama is not this foolish. I do believe, due to his Islamic roots, he has a more tolerant view of Islamic fanaticism than most Americans. Sharia Law is completely outdated and has no place in a modern society. The Taliban think stoning women to death for minor transgressions is a good thing.

American officials have privately backed Pakistan's "Sharia law for peace" deal with Taliban militants in the Swat Valley despite publicly criticising it as a "negative development".

The deal, under which Sharia law will be introduced in the Malakhand and Kohistan districts of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province if Taliban militants end their armed campaign in the Swat Valley, has been met with alarm by Nato chiefs and British and American officials.

Nato fears the deal would create a new "safe haven" for extremists, said a spokesman on Tuesday night, while a statement from Britain's High Commission in Islamabad said: "Previous peace deals have not provided a comprehensive and long-term solution to Swat's problems. We need to be confident that they will end violence, not create space for further violence."

President Barack Obama's special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan voiced the greatest concern about the strength of Taliban militants in Swat as he ended his first visit to the region since taking up his post.

"I talked to people from Swat and they were, frankly, quite terrified. Swat has really deeply affected the people of Pakistan, not just in Peshawar but in Lahore and Islamabad," he said, while a Defence Department official described the deal as a "negative development".

On Tuesday night however, US officials in Islamabad privately backed the deal as an attempt to drive a wedge between Swat's Taliban, which is focused on its demand for Sharia law, and the al-Qaeda-linked Taliban led by Baitullah Mehsud, the notorious commander who controls much of North and South Waziristan and other tribal areas along the Afghan border. Pakistan caves in to Taliban and implements sharia

The leaders of Pakistan don't have one quintillionth of judgment if they think making a deal with the Taliban for sharia is a good idea. They have agreed to end hostilities and implement sharia in the Malakand area of North Central Pakistan(yellow on map.) Don't they remember sports stadiums being used to stone women to death for minor transgressions? Don't they remember the al Qaeda training camps? The Taliban are religious fanatics and can not be expected to behave in a reasonable fashion. This is a move backwards in the war on terror.

The Pakistani government has negotiated an agreement with the Taliban in the war-torn district of Swat to end the fighting in exchange for the implementation of sharia, or Islamic law in a large region of the Northwest Frontier Province.

Negotiations on the five-point agreement have been conducted between the government of the insurgency-infested Northwest Frontier Province and Sufi Mohammed, the spiritual leader of the Movement for the Implementation of Mohammad's Sharia Law, and Mullah Fazlullah, the leader of the Swat Taliban and Sufi's son-in-law.
