NY Nanny State Update: Ban Machetes...

Kitchen knives will be next.

Via NYDN:
The sale of machetes should be outlawed after several recent attacks, a Queens pol said Wednesday.
State Sen. Tony Avella plans to introduce a bill to ban the possession of the scary blades in New York.
“The fact that anyone can easily purchase this potentially lethal tool is just crazy,” he said.
Smaller knives such as switchblades and gravity knives are already banned and listed as deadly weapons under state law, but machetes are considered the same as butcher knives.

Another Democrat is expected to be arrested for corruption...

It must be really bad if Eric Holder's DOJ is going to arrest a Democrat.

Via NY Times:
Federal authorities are expected to arrest Sheldon Silver, the powerful speaker of the New York State Assembly, on corruption charges on Thursday, people with knowledge of the matter said, in a case that is likely to throw Albany into disarray.
The investigation that led to the expected charges against Mr. Silver, a Democrat from the Lower East Side of Manhattan who has served as speaker for more than two decades, began after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in March abruptly shut down an anticorruption commission he had created in 2013.
Details of the specific charges to be brought against Mr. Silver were unclear on Wednesday night, but one of the people with knowledge of the matter said they stemmed from payments that Mr. Silver received from a small law firm that specializes in seeking reductions of New York City real estate taxes. Mr. Silver failed to list the payments from the firm, Goldberg & Iryami, on his annual financial disclosure filings, as required.

Got insomnia? That's a gun seizing in New York...

Anything is a reason to seize guns in New York and many states controlled by gun-hating liberals.

Via The Blaze:
U.S. Navy veteran and retired police officer Donald Montgomery is suing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other officials after his firearms were reportedly confiscated by police after he sought treatment for insomnia.
It all started after Montgomery visited his primary care physician on May 6 and complained about trouble sleeping, the Daily Caller reported. He claimed to have been suffering from insomnia since moving from a different state. Montgomery then returned to the hospital again days later for the same problems, except this time he was diagnosed with “Depression; Insomnia” by hospital staff.
On May 23, Montgomery returned to the hospital yet again with the same symptoms. He reportedly stayed at the hospital for 48 hours voluntarily for treatment.

Terrorism?

Via Pix 11 News:

NY Dr. with Ebola took an Uber car and went bowling Wednesday night...

Why was the man allowed to run around New York after returning from treating Ebola patients in West Africa? It's past time to impose a travel ban one anyone coming from Ebola outbreak countries in West Africa unless they undergo a mandatory quarantine.

Via CBS Local:
Those four people include Spencer’s fiancĂ©e and two friends – all of whom are healthy, but have still been quarantined, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Mary Travis Bassett said.
The fourth person who is in contact with the state is the driver of an Uber car, which Spencer took when he went bowling Wednesday night in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Bassett said. The Uber driver had no direct contact with Spencer, and is not believed to be in any danger, she said.
Uber issued a statement indicating that it also contacted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the city Health Department, which said the driver and subsequent passengers were not at risk.
It appears Doctors Without Borders has very lax rules for healthcare workers returning from Ebola countries. If someone catches Ebola from Dr. Craig Spencer, are they legally liable?

Nanny Stater wants to ban Happy Meal toys in NY...

It's time for the government to mind it's own business, not ours.

Via AFP:
A New York city councilman wants to ban toys in fast-food restaurant kid meals that do not meet strict dietary guidelines.
Democrat Ben Kallos introduced a bill Thursday that would ban the toys from a child’s meal if the food serving contains more than 500 calories and more than 600 milligrams of sodium.
The measure would also encourage including one half-cup of fruit or vegetables, or a serving of whole-grain products.
Under the proposal, violators would be fined between $200 and $500 for their first offense, no more than $1,000 for the second violation, and up to $2,500 for subsequent violations.
Former mayor Michael Bloomberg famously failed in his 2012 attempt to limit the size of giant sodas, so prospects are slim for Kallos’s measure.

Stupid: Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to bring back the big gulp ban.

Liberalism...it's all about the control.

Via Newsmax:
Hide your Big Gulps again, New York.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this week his administration will pick up where former Mayor Michael Bloomberg left off and will continue the battle to ban sodas larger than 16 ounces. The city will appeal a state court ruling that pulled the plug on the ban last year.
City lawyers will argue the case at the Court of Appeals on June 4, the New York Daily News reported this week.
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg got plenty of headlines in 2012 when he declared war on Big Gulps and other large sugary drinks.
The much discussed ban on sodas over 16 ounces was an edict issued by the city's Health Department and never got approval from city council. A state judge in March 2013 blocked the ban and said Bloomberg overstepped his authority in issuing it without the city council's consent.
De Blasio and Bloomberg have not seen eye to eye on everything, but the new boss is the same as the old boss when it comes to regulating away that special kind of joy that can only be found at the bottom of a half-gallon of Coca-Cola.

NY SAFE Act Fail: Over 90 percent of gun owners have yet to comply

Have the sheeple in the northeast finally awakened?
Via Breitbart:
With the April 15 deadline for gun registration under the SAFE Act fast approaching, estimates indicate over 90 percent of gun owners have yet to comply.
Making matters worse for elected officials–and Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) in particular–is the fact that many law enforcement officers at various levels have openly stated that they will not enforce SAFE Act requirements.
According to BearingArms.com, while the state waits for the “registration of 1 million firearms designated as ‘assault weapons’ under the NY SAFE Act,” leaks believed to be coming from within the New York State Police indicate the number registered to date is “as low as…3,000-5,000 firearms.”
This is figure is impossible to verify beyond a shadow of doubt because a provision in the SAFE Act forbids law enforcement from releasing registration figures.

90% of NY Gun owners refusing to comply with Safe Act registration requirement...

Gun owners know registration is the precursor to confiscation.  Many tout Australia as a model for gun control. Prior to 1996, Australia has strict gun registration laws. In 1996, they banned all semi-automatics, self-loading guns and even pump shotguns.

NY loses 2000 new Remington Arms jobs

Remington is expanding in the gun-friendly state of Alabama...

Via WIBX
News sources in Alabama reported on Saturday that an announcement will be made on Monday confirming that Remington Arms is building a new 500,000 square-foot plant in that state and the $87 (m) million dollar investment will mean about 2000 jobs.
Alabama’s Yellowhammer, Military Times and AL.com have reported that some of the jobs will be coming from Remington’s birthplace, Ilion, where some 1300 jobs remain.
The Yellowhammer quotes an inside anonymous source at Remington who claims that the Ilion plant will remain open, but with a ‘reduced workforce.’
Governor Cuomo’s spokesman, Rich Azzopardi used Twitter on Saturday night to dispute that, by saying, “…to be clear, no Remington jobs are leaving New York.”
Some are misinformed, others gleefully spreading misinformation, but to be clear, no Remington jobs are leaving NY.
— Rich Azzopardi (@RichAzzopardi) February 16, 2014
Governor Cuomo’s spokesman is trying to spin this as n job loss for New York. It may be correct the current NY Remington plant isn't cutting back for now. On the other hand, NY isn't getting the 2000 new manufacturing jobs.

Commie NY Mayor Bill de Blasio wants Albany to "allow New York City to tax itself"

By "allow New York City to tax itself" Blasio means sock it to the wealthy...
For those unfamiliar with New York tax law, the State of New York would have to hike the tax rate on New York City residents. Thankfully, the City Council and the Mayor can’t do it on their own. Cuomo, a liberal with sights on the White House in 2016, wants to appear as a pro-business Democrat. Raising taxes could haunt him now and in 2016. So, Cuomo throws Bill de Blasio a bone and says that he’ll fund universal pre-kindergarten without the tax hike. Sounds pretty reasonable for New York, right? Everyone wins?
Wrong. Bill de Blasio wants to make the rich hurt.
We’re simply asking Albany to allow New York City to tax itself – its wealthiest residents…those making a half-million or more a year.
Raising taxes on the rich makes our commitment to our kids more than just words. It makes that commitment REAL. It makes that commitment fair. And it offers a promise to our kids that they can count on.
What chutzpah! Allow New York City to tax itself?
Hey, Bill – if “the richest New Yorkers” wanted to pony up more money to pay for your pipe dream of universal pre-kindergarten, they wouldn’t need to do so under penalty of imprisonment.

NY passes SAFE Act gun control. NRA membership doubles in one year...

Push back...

Via Buffalo News:
As gun rights and gun control groups continue to argue over the effects of the New York SAFE Act, one consequence is clear: membership in the state affiliate of the National Rifle Association has soared since the law was enacted a year ago.
Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, said the NRA headquarters in Washington recently informed him his state affiliate has now surpassed Texas and California to become the largest state NRA chapter in the nation.
The NRA affiliate saw its membership rise from 22,000 statewide to 41,000 since the SAFE Act was approved in January 2013, King said.
While he said his group has had regular membership growth over the years, “it has grown exponentially faster than it ever has before and it can only be attributed to the SAFE Act,’’ he said.

Change: Rich neighborhoods claim de Blasio not snow plowing their streets...

Politics...

Via The NYP:
Huge swaths of the city’s wealthiest neighborhood had been not been plowed by early Tuesday evening, leaving 1-percenters out in the cold, according to the city’s own map of snow-plower activity.
“He is trying to get us back. He is very divisive and political,” said writer and Life-long Upper East Sider and mom Molly Jong Fast of Mayor de Blasio.
“By not plowing the Upper East Side, he is saying, ‘I’m not one of them.’ But we have everyone in this area on the Upper East Side. We have rich people, middle class people, and housing projects. We have it all.”
There appeared to be no snow plowing between East 59th and 79th Streets and between Second and Fifth Avenues.

The next nanny state target in NY is horse-drawn carriages

Apparently, making a horse pull a carriage is inhumane or something.  After the horses aren't needed anymore, they can be legally turned into horseburger. That will be so much more humane.

Via NYDN:
Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio vowed to act quickly to abolish horse-drawn carriages in the city.
“We are going to get rid of the horse carriages. Period,” de Blasio said in response to a question at his press conference announcing his schools chancellor pick Monday.
“It’s over,” he said.
De Blasio said he would work with existing drivers to set them up with alternative vehicles to ferry tourists around Central Park.
De Blasio and advocacy groups who support him say it’s inhumane to make the horses work the dangerous city streets, but drivers insist their horses are well cared for and there’s no reason to end the industry.

Gun company 'American Tactical Imports' abandons New York...

American Tactical Imports (ATI) is moving to south Carolina. It's a great state. Let's wish them well.
American Tactical Imports (ATI) is the latest gun manufacturing company to flee New York’s draconian gun laws for safer grounds, citing the state’s passage of the SAFE Act and Summerville, South Carolina’s proximity to the port-of-entry for several of their imported products.
The move will bring more than 115 jobs to South Carolina where locals are supportive of the company’s move.  ”The people of South Carolina have welcomed ATI with open arms and we are excited about making our new corporate home there,” said company president Tony DiChario.  ATI will invest nearly $3 million in Summerville, a Charleston suburb.

State Obamacare exchanges are also having issues...

As of Friday, no one in New York had actually completed the Obamacare enrollment process.A few thousand had sign up to enroll, but the state is holding their data because it may be inaccurate.

Via NY Daily News:
In New York, one of only 16 states that has its own exchange, not one person had succeeded in using the site to enroll in a plan as of Friday.
Donna Frescatore, director of the New York State of Health marketplace, said Friday that 134,000 people had registered and shopped on the state’s online health care site since its Oct. 1 launch, and thousands signed up to enroll in a plan.
But the state has repeatedly delayed electronically transmitting those users’ data to insurers offering health plans.
The department, which held off in order to verify the accuracy of the information users submitted, said it would transfer the first batch of enrollees’ data — which includes thousands of transactions — as early as Friday night.

NY Police have an alternative to "Stop and Frisk." They are now shooting bystanders in walkers...

Kelly's Keystone cops in action...

Via NY Daily News:
As officers tried to corral the hulking wacko, he suddenly “reached into his pocket, took out his hand, and simulated as if he was shooting at them,” Kelly said.

One officer fired a single shot at the man but missed.
The second officer squeezed off two rounds that also went wayward, Kelly said.
A 54-year-old woman who uses a walker was struck in the lower right leg and rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

A 35-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the buttocks and was transported to Roosevelt Hospital.

Good News: Judge invalidates "Big Gulp" ban...

Finally, proof there is one sane judge in New York.

Via WSJ:
A state judge on Monday stopped Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration from banning New York City restaurants and other venues from selling large sugary drinks, a major defeat for the mayor who has made public-health initiatives a cornerstone of his tenure at City Hall.
The city is “enjoined and permanently restrained from implementing or enforcing the new regulations,” New York Supreme Court Judge Milton Tingling decided Monday.
The regulations are “fraught with arbitrary and capricious consequences,” the judge wrote. “The simple reading of the rule leads to the earlier acknowledged uneven enforcement even within a particular city block, much less the city as a whole….the loopholes in this rule effectively defeat the state purpose of the rule.”

Fail: No gun manufacturer plans to make 7 round magazines to comply with New York 10 round magazine ban?

Proving again gun control supporters are idiots...

Via ithacajournal:
Starting April 15, New York will have the smallest gun magazine limit in the country, and all signs indicate no gun makers have plans to accommodate it.

Gun manufacturers have never had a reason to make a magazine with fewer than 10 rounds, because no state required it until now. And, as far as local gun dealers and the Democrat and Chronicle have been able to determine, there are no manufacturers planning to make seven-round magazines.

This means that in less than two months, gun dealers such as Paul Martin, owner of Pro-Gun Services in Victor, can only sell something that doesn’t exist yet.

“There was never a need for a (seven-round magazine),” Martin said. “Not many manufacturers are going to bother to make something just for the state of New York.”

The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, passed in January, says gun dealers cannot sell magazines with more than seven rounds beginning April 15. However, three gun dealers in the Rochester area say manufacturers don’t make a seven-round magazine for most guns, and several manufacturers don’t disagree. This leaves store owners wondering what they are going to sell. More here...
