Connecticut gun owners refusing to comply with law requiring registration of assault-looking weapons...

That's because they know confiscation may soon come after registration.

The Courant reported:
Everyone knew there would be some gun owners flouting the law that legislators hurriedly passed last April, requiring residents to register all military-style rifles with state police by Dec. 31.
But few thought the figures would be this bad.
By the end of 2013, state police had received 47,916 applications for assault weapons certificates, Lt. Paul Vance said. An additional 2,100 that were incomplete could still come in.
That 50,000 figure could be as little as 15 percent of the rifles classified as assault weapons owned by Connecticut residents, according to estimates by people in the industry, including the Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation. No one has anything close to definitive figures, but the most conservative estimates place the number of unregistered assault weapons well above 50,000, and perhaps as high as 350,000.
And that means as of Jan. 1, Connecticut has very likely created tens of thousands of newly minted criminals — perhaps 100,000 people, almost certainly at least 20,000 — who have broken no other laws. By owning unregistered guns defined as assault weapons, all of them are committing Class D felonies.

Strange: Sen. Patrick Leahy concedes assault weapons may be needed by public in case of zombie apocalypse...

(Warner Brothers Pictures: Sen. Leahy’s cameo in the Dark Knight)

I can think of a few more cases where an assault weapon would come in handy...

Via NPR:
Two more gun control bills are heading to the Senate floor after narrowly winning approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. The legislation requiring background checks for nearly all gun sales will likely face stiff opposition in its current version, but it's the second proposal, banning assault weapons, that may get particularly heated push back from lawmakers.

Maybe if zombies attacked, you might need a semiautomatic assault weapon for self-defense. That was one concession Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., was willing to make this week when the Senate Judiciary Committee was debating the assault weapons ban. But short of an entire zombie takeover, Leahy says, he's always been perfectly satisfied with his .45-caliber at home.

"Even when we had people escaping from prison announcing they were going to kill me, I felt pretty comfortable with that," he said.

Of course, what's a legislative debate without a few extreme examples? Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, joined in when he said that taking assault weapons away from law-abiding citizens would leave them outgunned by criminals.
Liberals are really out of touch with reality...

Feinsten's so-called assault weapon ban excludes government officials...

Who would you trust more with a modern firearm? Some government official or your friends, family and neighbors?

Via Washington Times:
Her bill seeks to reinstate and expand the ban on assault weapons that was first enacted in 1994, but which lapsed in 2004.

It would prohibit semiautomatic pistols that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature, such as a pistol grip or telescoping. Purchasing the AR-15 Bushmaster rifle, which was used by the shooter in Newtown, would be illegal under the ban.

Mrs. Feinstein's measure would exempt more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles; guns manually operated by bolt, pump, lever or slide action; and weapons used by government officials, law enforcement and retired law enforcement personnel.

It would also ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

Clueless Sen. Feinstein vows to take "Weapons of war" off the streets...

She does realize these are semiautomatics, doesn't she?

Shocking Ignorance: Mayor Bloomberg doesn't know so called "assault weapons" are semi-automatic... (video)

NYC  Mayor Bloomberg thinks "assault weapons" sold in US are fully automatic. You would think he would research the subject before opening his ignorant mouth. He should be really shocked when he learns the differences between a non assault rifle and an assault rifle are mostly cosmetic.

Irony: Gun ban talk spikes gun and ammo sales...

If Congress gets around to banning so-called "assault weapons,"  it won't much matter in the short term. They are already all sold out.
NEW YORK (AP) — The phones at Red's Trading Post wouldn't stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped.

Overwhelmed, manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three days.

"We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red's Trading Post, the state's oldest gun shop, since 1936. "We were swamped in the store and online."

Phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook.

Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators. The shooting sparked calls for tighter gun control, especially for military-style assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting earlier this year. Assault-type weapons only used on 2% of crimes...

Facts...

Via Washington Secrets:
Despite their overwhelming popularity, assault weapons like the rifle used by the Sandy Hook Elementary killer are very rarely used in crimes, according to a comprehensive Congressional Research Service report on guns and gun control legislation.
Citing a survey of 203,300 state and federal prisoners who were armed during the crime for which they were incarcerated, “fewer than 1 in 50, or less than 2 percent, used, carried, or possessed a semiautomatic assault weapon,” said the report.
The weapons, however, are at the center of President Obama’s bid to put in place new gun control rules following the Connecticut killings last week. His effort, backed by gun-control Democrats, is expected to lead to a new proposal to ban the weapons and also crack down on gun sales throughout the nation.

RINO Sen. Richard Lugar Calls For Assault Weapons Ban In Wake Of Giffords' Shooting

Gun Digest Buyer's Guide To Assault Weapons
I would point out Jared Loughner didn't use an assault weapon, but the logic train has already left the station.
(Politico) Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) this weekend called on Congress to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

Lugar is the first GOP senator to call for increased gun control following the Tucson tragedy that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. But Lugar, who supported the initial 10-year-long assault weapons ban when it passed in 1994, said he’s not optimistic about the chances for passing gun control legislation this Congress.

The Sarah Palin Assault Rifle

The NRA is honoring Sarah Palin with an assault rifle engraved with Palin's name and adorned with a map of the state on the collapsible stock.

The New York Daily News is reporting:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was bashed for her pricey wardrobe, but now she's getting a lethal accessory.

The National Rifle Association Foundation will present Sen. John McCain's ill-fated running mate with a military-style assault weapon next week.

The all-white "Alaskan Hunter" - fashionable until Labor Day - is the civilian version of a modified M-4 rifle carried by U.S. troops overseas.

Alaska's feisty Republican governor, who is weighing a potential 2012 presidential bid, will receive the rifle made by Templar Consulting at a May 14 NRA banquet.

It's engraved with Palin's name and adorned with a map of the state on the collapsible stock - made legal after the expiration of the assault weapons ban in 2004. The Big Dipper from the state flag is etched on the magazine well behind a vented barrel guard.

The rifle is chambered in .50-caliber "Beowulf." It's the same caliber used by heavy machine guns, which can take down big game, and in war zones "can disable both motor vehicles and assailants with body armor," according to ammo manufacturer Alexander Arms' Web site.
