Obamanomics: One third of Americans figure they'll need to work until age 80

This tidbit is buried in a  ABC story about Americans working longer.
Rix said there's a host of reasons behind the increases. For one, individuals can continue to work because they're staying healthier longer.
"I suspect most people are there because they're doing something they really want to do. They enjoy their work. They're making a contribution."
There are also financial considerations. With the drop in home prices, the fluctuating stock market, and the decline in pensions, some older workers simply have to work.
For Cooper, that's definitely part of the equation.
"When you get my age, you have a lot of doctor bills and different ailments. You have to pay the doctors and hospitals, so I am here," he said.
A recent survey by Wells Fargo found that nearly a third of Americans figure they'll need to work until age 80, in order to retire comfortably. The federal government estimates that by 2020, 10 percent of those aged 75 and older will be in the labor force. Rix believes the number is likely to be even higher.

It's On: GOP Goes After AARP Over Obamacare Support

The AARP was a strong supporter of Obamacare. Considering the $500 billion in Medicare cuts in the bill, this seems strange. Republicans think they know why the AARP sold out seniors. They make a lot of money selling seniors insurance and supplemental health insurance policies.
(The Hill)- The Ways and Means health and oversight subcommittees are hauling in the seniors lobby's executives before the panel for an April 1 hearing on how the group stands to benefit from the law, among other topics. Republicans say AARP supported the law's $200 billion in cuts to the Medicare Advantage program because it stands to gain financially as seniors replace their MA plans with Medicare supplemental insurance — or Medigap — policies endorsed by the association.

The hearing will cover not only Medigap but "AARP’s organizational structure, management, and financial growth over the last decade."

An embarrassing hearing would not only hit AARP back for its support of the law, but fits in with the GOP's mantra that the law was written behind closed doors to favor Democratic allies.

Senior Citizens Prohibited From Praying Before Government Subsidized Meal

Senior Citizens Inc. officials have prohibited prayer at Port Wentworth's Ed Young Senior Citizens Center near Savannah when they provide the meal. They claim government rules prohibit it in the name of separation of church and state because part of the meal is paid for by a federal subsidy. This is political correctness insanity.

WSBTV reported:

But Senior Citizens Inc. officials said Friday the meals they are contracted by the city to provide to Ed Young visitors are mostly covered with federal money, which ushers in the burden of separating church and state.

The dilemma is being hashed out by the Port Wentworth city attorney, said Mayor Glenn "Pig" Jones...

"We can't scoff at their rules," he said of federal authorities. "It's a part of the operational guidelines."

John McCain: "Take your AARP membership card, cut it in half "

The AARP has betrayed their membership by supporting the Democrats health care reform. Why would a senior advocacy group support a bill that imposes a half a trillion cut in medicare spending and forces over 10 million out of their improved benefit Medicare advantage plans? The reason is there is gold in the bill for the AARP.

From the video:
"Take your AARP membership card, cut it in half and send it back to AARP because they have betrayed you."

Wonder Why the AARP Supports Obamacare?

The answer may be greed. The AARP has been a strong supporter of Obamacare for the last several months. This position is not held by most of their membership. Many AARP members have resigned over the leadership's position. So, why is the AARP supporting the Democrat's health care overhaul? It isn't concern for providing coverage to their membership. Most seniors have insurance or are covered under Medicare. The reason the AARP supports Obamcare appears to be money. Under the Democrats health care reform plan, $162 billion in payments to privately-administered Medicare Advantage will be cut. This will force many seniors into government-administered plans with less generous benefits. Then, these seniors will need supplemental coverage sold by (drum roll please) the AARP. When private health insurance company Humana tried to warn seniors about the cuts in Medicare Advantage in a mailer, the HHS ordered them to stop sending the mailer and take the information off their website. However, if you want to issue a bulletin supporting the Democrats position that $500 billion can be cut from the Medicare budget without causing any cuts to senior's benefits, HHS doesn't have a problem with you.

From American Spectator:
President Obama and Democrats have proposed saving money to pay for health care legislation, in part, by cutting $162 billion in payments to Medicare Advantage, which allows Medicare recipients to choose privately-administered coverage. If these changes go through, millions of seniors who have chosen Medicare Advantage would lose their current coverage, forcing them into government-administered plans with less generous benefits. As a result, many of them would have to purchase policies to supplement traditional Medicare. Enter AARP.

In 2008, AARP generated $652.7 million in revenue by selling products like Medigap supplemental Medicare insurance, accounting for over 60 percent of the group's revenue...

Gallup: Obama’s weekly average approval at new low

President Obama's approval is dropping dramatically among seniors, the young and upper income Americans.

From Gallop:
Approval of Obama is down among all major age groups over the past month, but the drop has been particularly steep -- 11 points -- among adults aged 18 to 29 (though young Americans continue to give Obama the strongest support). It has dropped by four to seven points during that time among the three older age categories of Americans. However, over the past week, the sharpest drop -- from 48% to 43% -- has been among seniors.

Seniors remain the only age group whose average approval rating of Obama is below 50%, a pattern seen since mid-July. But last week, for the first time, finds more seniors disapproving than approving of Obama (48% disapprove vs. 43% who approve).

Support for Obama has also dropped below 50% for the first time among upper-income Americans (those making $90,000 or more per year) and registers below that threshold for only the second time among upper-middle-income earners (those earning from $60,000 to $89,999).

From the RNC: Seniors’ Health Care Bill Of Rights

The Hippocratic oath says, "Above all, do no harm." Republicans say health care reform should do no harm. They have issued a Seniors’ Health Care Bill Of Rights.

From the GOP:
* PROTECT MEDICARE AND NOT CUT IT IN THE NAME OF HEALTH CARE REFORM: President Obama and Congressional Democrats are promoting a government-run health care experiment that will cut over $500 billion from Medicare to be used to pay for their plan. Medicare should not be raided to pay for another entitlement.

* PROHIBIT GOVERNMENT FROM GETTING BETWEEN SENIORS AND THEIR DOCTORS: The Democrats’ government-run health care experiment will give patients less power to control their own medical decisions, and create government boards that would decide what treatments would or wouldn’t be funded. Republicans believe in patient-centered reforms that put the priorities of seniors before government.

* PROHIBIT EFFORTS TO RATION HEALTH CARE BASED ON AGE:
The Democrats’ government-run health care experiment would set up a “comparative effectiveness research commission” where health care treatment decisions could be limited based on a patient’s age. Republicans believe that health care decisions are best left up to seniors and their doctors.

* PREVENT GOVERNMENT FROM INTERFERING WITH END-OF-LIFE CARE DISCUSSIONS: The Democrats’ government-run health care experiment would have seniors meet with a doctor to discuss end-of-life care that could mean limiting treatment. Republicans believe that government should not interfere with end-of-life care discussions between a patient and a doctor.

* ENSURE SENIORS CAN KEEP THEIR CURRENT COVERAGE: As Democrats continue to propose steep cuts to Medicare in order to pay for their government-run health care experiment, these cuts threaten millions of seniors with being forced from their current Medicare Advantage plans. Republicans believe that seniors should not be targeted by a government-run health care bill and forced out of their current Medicare coverage.

* PROTECT VETERANS BY PRESERVING TRICARE AND OTHER BENEFIT PROGRAMS FOR MILITARY FAMILIES:
Democrats recently proposed raising veterans’ costs for the Tricare For Life program that many veterans rely on for treatment. Republicans oppose increasing the burden on our veterans and believe America should honor our promises to them.

Obamacare's Plan for Seniors: Die

Democrats trying to formulate health care reform are struggling with the issue of cost containment. The CBO issued a report stating their plan would increase costs. One version of Obamacare being considered in the House has an innovative cost control idea for Seniors. Just lie down and die.

From WND:
The version of President Obama's universal health care plan pending in the U.S. House would require "end-of-life" counseling for senior citizens, and the former lieutenant governor for the state of New York is warning people to "protect their parents" from the measure.

At issue is section 1233 of the legislative proposal that deals with a government requirement for an "Advance Care Planning Consultation."

"One of the most shocking things is page 425, where the Congress would make it mandatory absolutely that every five years people in Medicare have a required counseling session," she said. "They will tell [them] how to end their life sooner."

The proposal specifically calls for the consultation to recommend "palliative care and hospice" for seniors in their mandatory counseling sessions. Palliative care and hospice generally focus only on pain relief until death.
