A skirmish broke out between rival activists on the steps of City Hall Wednesday during what had been intended as a demonstration against violence in Newark.
Police were called to the scene after a small crowd began arguing over escalating violence and the city’s attempts to curb it.
The noon press conference was called by a group of activists led by Salaam Ismial, co-chair of the New Jersey Study Commission on Violence, and Abdul Muhammad, a longtime Newark anti-violence activist. In a release announcing the event, the two said they planned to ask Mayor Ras Baraka to “unleash his quality of life plan in addressing ongoing violence facing Newark residents.”
As the group spoke to reporters, however, a group of Baraka supporters including activist Donna Jackson and Tyrone “Street Counselor” Barnes began heckling and shouting from the base of the steps.
It soon evolved into an intense face-off between Jackson and Muhammad, which then erupted into a skirmish between members of the two camps. At one point, Barnes put his hands around Muhammad’s neck and pushed him to the ground.
Organizers and other participants said the skirmish lasted only a few minutes, and there were no serious injuries.

An Occupy Wall Street protestor was arrested early Friday after a violent rampage at a McDonald’s that refused to offer him free food.

The NYPD says it happened at about 2:45 a.m. at a McDonald’s near the make-shift tent city in Zuccotti Park.

The man, who had not been identified, went into the world’s largest restaurant chain and demanded free food, apparently craving a burger over the gourmet food being served in the park.

The people behind the counter, who are working instead of protesting, were not about to offer the man free food.

The protester then turned violent, even breaking a machine inside of the store before police arrived and arrested the 27-year-old.

Survey: 80% of mosques advocate or promote violence

A survey published by the Middle East Quarterly has found support for violence is widespread inside America's Mosques.

(WND)- Dozens of mosques around the United States have been identified in a new study as incubators for jihad against America, with more than 80 percent of those surveyed advocating violence.

"Of the 100 mosques surveyed, 51 percent had texts on-site rated as severely advocating violence; 30 percent had texts rated as moderately advocating violence; and 19 percent had no violent texts at all," said the survey compiled by Mordechai Kedar and David Yerushalmi and published by the Middle East Quarterly.

7 People Killed at Anti-Violence Park in Mexico

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Gunmen spraying automatic weapons fire killed seven people at a park that had been built as an anti-violence measure in the besieged Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, authorities said Monday.

The assailants arrived during a soccer game the park in the Francisco I. Madero neighborhood and opened fire Sunday afternoon, said Carlos Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Chihuahua state prosecutors' office.

Two of the people killed had been playing soccer.

Two Republican party officials were shocked to hear someone had thrown a brick through a window at their headquarters downtown -- with a message directed at stopping conservatism.

"Stop the right wing," was written in purple ink on a piece of notebook paper.

Harry Reid is concerned unemployed men will beat their spouses. This is why he has spent the last year working his butt off on a jobs health care bill.



I know many will clam their is a connection between unemployment and domestic abuse. My belief is there are men who will abuse their spouses and those that never will. Economics will not turn a non-abusive individual into an abuser. Of course, if people with abusive tendencies spend more time together or consume more alcohol, the opportunity for domestic violence rises.

Chris Matthews lost it today after Dick Cheney's rebuttal of President Obama's national defense speech. Watching Cheny debate Obama is like watching a howitzer going against a water gun. It is no contest. Matthews took his frustration out on Micheal Steele.

Arizona Governor wants Federal troops for border

The level of violence across the border in Mexico has become so alarming Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has requested the Federal Government to station more troops on the border. Mexico has deployed their Army to Juarez, across the border from Texas, to try to control the violent drug gangs that have taken over this border town. The situation is so bad in Juarez that the police chief has resigned and the Mayor moved out. Already this year there have been 1,000 people killed in Mexico along the border

Drug wars and scores of murders in northern Mexico has prompted Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to ask the Pentagon for more troops along the state’s border with Mexico.

Brewer has written U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates asking for an increase in National Guard troops from 150 to 400.

“Arizona communities and citizens are negatively affected by the impacts of the illegal drug trade and related border violence, and enforcement agencies in all jurisdictions are stretched as they attempt to address the enormity of the problems,” Brewer said Wednesday. “Our citizens must be protected from border violence. Arizona and other U.S./Mexico border states continue to be confronted by a number of unique and disproportionate challenges relative to other states and we bear significant unreimbursed costs in the public, nonprofit and business sectors associated with border related challenges.” (excerpt) read more at bizjournals.com

Disorder on the border

Mexico has deployed the Army to Juarez to try to control the violent drug gangs that have taken over this border town. Secretary of Defense Gates has offered assistance from the US military for training. The situation is so bad in Juarez that the police chief has resigned and the Mayor moved out. These drug gangs are heavily armed. If they decide to cross the border into the US, there is little to initially stop them.

In February, police in Juarez, Mexico, found a smoldering body - the apparent victim of homicide by fire. The day before, they had found two men who had been decapitated, their heads in plastic bags nearby. As horrendous as this is, it is not uncommon: More than 300 have been murdered in Juarez this year.
