White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest additionally mocked Chairman Darrell Issa for his pronunciation of the word “Ebola” and dismissed the hearing.
“I didn’t see much of it,” Earnest said to reporters during the White House Press briefing. “It does seem that most of the criticism was registered by somebody who struggled to pronounce the name of the virus at the hearing.”

REP. DARRELL ISSA: We have a Republican alternative that is very similar to the Senate. We think it's considerably better. It does deal, as you're going to hear again and again, it does deal with the medical device tax. It also deals with the so-called Vitter Amendment for members of Congress, the president, the vice president and the cabinet, as it should.

QUESTION: What was the problem with the Senate bill? What was the main problem that was raised?

ISSA: Well, they haven't brought it over yet --

QUESTION: Well, the Senate proposal --

ISSA: Well, we think we've enhanced it in a number of ways, including if Obamacare is good for members of Congress, then it's good for the president. You know, the president signed a bill that left himself out of Obamacare but put members of Congress in. I think it's time that the president go into Obamacare, and I mean really into Obamacare.

QUESTION: The medical device --

QUESTION: What happens if the Senate Democrats strip out the language?

ISSA: Well, you know, I famously said, you know, I famously said, you know, I’m not going to deal with things that haven't happened yet, and I think in this case we haven't yet passed our bill, they haven't yet passed their bill. We’ve evaluated where their thinking is and the idea of compromise is look where their thinking is, look where our thinking is, propose something that they should be able to accept. And so we're today going to vote a bill that we believe the Senate should accept based on their likely negotiation. Now, if the Senate wants to say my way or the highway, then I suggest that Senate Republicans not go along with that strategy, but rather with a strategy that the House and Senate can vote on, and it can become law. Thank you.

QUESTION: February 7th or January 15th for the CR?

ISSA: You know, I believe the dates the Senate are looking at are the dates we're trying to look at. Again, the speaker is trying to find what is possible in the Senate and what's possible in the House and bring them together. We’re going to move what's possible in the House today. We believe it is close enough to what's possible in the Senate that Senate Republicans should work with Senate Democrats to say this is one we can both live with, including as many provisions as the Senate but, of course, it does have some important things.

Look, I think if the president thinks so well of Obamacare and the vice president thinks so well of Obamacare, he should be in it. So I think for the members of the -- for Sebelius to not be in Obamacare and then not feel the pain of its complete and total failure to perform at the scheduled levels is a good example of where, you know, getting into it is important. And I think that was the provision when the Senate put in members of Congress. Members of our staff are not particularly important to understand that they're different than other federal workers. But appointees of the president, the president, the vice president, members of Congress, it might very well be good for them to be in the Affordable Care Act and find out that when you go online, you can't get online.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again.

The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service.

“When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Lerner’s decision to speak at all immediately triggered a dust-up among lawmakers who were confused about whether she gave up her Fifth Amendment protections when she made an opening statement.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), a former federal prosecutor, said Lerner lost her rights the minute she started proclaiming her innocence, and that lawmakers therefore were entitled to question her. But Ranking Democrat Elijah Cummings of Maryland said hearing rules were not like those of a courtroom.

Holder stalls, Republicans plan to hold contempt vote today

Rep. Darrell Issa and AG Eric Holder meet yesterday afternoon. Holder failed to turn over anymore documents. Instead, he wanted Issa and House Republicans to settle for some lame briefings. That is a no pass. Unless Holder turns over documents this morning, it looks like the contempt vote will go forward. It doesn't appear Holder was seriously trying to resolve the issue. Republicans have claimed they will get as many as 30+ Democrats to vote with them to hold Holder in contempt. This whole charade by Eric Holder is an attempt to provide cover for Democrats to vote against the contempt charge.

House Republicans are charging head first into their most direct conflict with President Barack Obama’s administration over the extent of executive branch power, as they prepare to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress on Wednesday.

Holder and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) failed to reach an agreement on what documents the administration would fork over to help Republicans investigate the Fast and Furious program, a joint Justice Department-Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives operation that put guns into the hands of Mexican cartels.

The two sides remained at loggerheads Tuesday evening, after a 20-minute huddle in Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s third-floor Capitol suite. Holder later called Issa’s position “political gamesmanship” and not a true attempt to resolve the dispute.

After the session, Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said no deal was in hand and Wednesday’s vote would move forward, barring a last-minute reversal.

(Politico) — House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) threatened Tuesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress if the Justice Department did not provide certain documents in response to the committee’s subpoena.

In a letter to Holder, Issa wrote that “this committee will have no alternative but to move forward with proceedings to hold you in contempt of Congress” if Holder and the DOJ didn’t produce documents they demanded relating to the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal.
Holder has until Thursday, Feb. 9. to comply, according to Issa.

Issa accused the Justice Department of trying to “obstruct our investigation and deceive the public” by withholding documents.
“Your actions lead us to conclude that the department is actively engaged in a cover-up,” he said in a four-page letter.

(The Hill) — Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has requested a briefing with the Justice Department over a news report that U.S. law enforcement officials helped Mexican drug cartels launder millions of dollars into the country.

The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee made the request in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, in which he questioned DOJ head’s ability to lead the agency.

Issa has been investigating the DOJ’s authorization of a botched gun-tracking operation for most of the year and has increasingly criticized Holder, who is set to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

“The existence of such a program again calls your leadership into question,” said Issa in his letter. “The managerial structure you have implemented lacks appropriate operational safeguards to prevent the implementation of such dangerous schemes. The consequences have been disastrous.”

(Politico) — House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa says the next phase of his investigation into the “Fast and Furious” controversy will target top Justice Department officials to determine “what did they know and when did they know it?”

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” the California Republican suggested that Attorney General Eric Holder knew about the risky gun trafficking operation with Mexican drug cartels months before the time frame he acknowledged in congressional testimony earlier this year. And Issa said he would issue subpoenas as soon as this week to the Justice Department, calling elements of the program “a felony.”

Holder has denied that he was aware of the details of the operation until a couple weeks before he testified earlier this year, an assertion Issa called “disingenuous on its face.”

(The Hill) — Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Friday described the National Labor Relations Board as a “rogue agency” for its response to

The NLRB has yet to provide any documents to Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The board’s general counsel said Friday in a letter to Issa that the NLRB was concerned about releasing any documents prematurely.

That provoked a harsh response from Issa, who said the NLRB’s hesitation put into question “the integrity of NLRB and its leadership.”

“The National Labor Relations Board and Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon have thus far failed to comply with a lawful subpoena,” Issa said in a statement released Friday. “This refusal by NLRB to abide by the law further heightens concerns that this is a rogue agency acting improperly.”

In his letter, Solomon said the NLRB continues to be “gravely concerned about the adverse effect any premature release of certain documents subject to the subpoena would have on the rights of the parties to this case to have a fair trial.”

He is planning on almost doubling it's staff and launching investigations into wrong-doing by the Obama administration. Hmm...

Rep. Darrell Issa, the conservative firebrand whose specialty is lobbing corruption allegations at the Obama White House, is making plans to hire dozens of subpoena-wielding investigators if Republicans win the House this fall.

Issa has told Republican leadership that if he becomes chairman, he wants to roughly double his staff from 40 to between 70 and 80. And he is not subtle about what that means for President Barack Obama.
