(Telegraph) — The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

“To ensure that our national security is protected, the United States has an interest in tracking Russia’s nuclear arsenal through a verification effort that puts U.S. inspectors on the ground. As President Reagan said when he signed a nuclear arms treaty with the Soviet Union in 1987, ‘Trust, but verify,’” Obama said.

Obama May Bypass Senate Ratification for Arms Treaty

With the clock running out on START and President Obama on the ground in Moscow, the administration is looking for anything they can find to put a positive spin in the media on this trip. Obama is not receiving a heroic welcome in Moscow like he did in Europe. The 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I) before it expires on December 5. The Russians are demanding compromise on the missile defense shield. The Senate ratification process may be difficult if President Obama has to give away our missile defense shield to get Russian approval.
