The Trump administration moved Wednesday to reimpose work requirements for Americans on welfare, revoking an Obama-era policy that had urged states to apply for waivers exempting the poor from having to show they were either getting job training or looking for work.
Requiring work was a key part of the 1996 welfare reform law enacted by a GOP-led Congress and signed by then-President Clinton, and Mr. Trump’s move restores the law as written.

Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee is trying to get more work into welfare.
On Wednesday, Lee introduced a bill that would restore the monthly work requirements for food stamps that President Obama suspended in 2009 with the stimulus. Lee’s legislation will also attempt to get control over welfare spending and provide more transparency by placing caps on annual means-tested program spending and requiring states to report spending levels.
“Poverty is not just the absence of money, but also the absence of opportunity,” Lee said. “Today’s poverty programs place artificial restraints on those who are trying to get ahead, build careers and provide better lives for themselves and their families. Successful welfare programs are those that make poverty more temporary, not more tolerable, and we need to move current policy in that direction.”
The “Welfare Reform and Upward Mobility Act” is currently cosponsored by Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, Louisiana Republican Sen. David Vitter, and Oklahoma Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe.
Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan has a companion bill in the House.
“It’s sad to see one of the two major parties step over the line and say it’s good when people work less,” Jordan said Monday of the effort to bring more work to welfare, arguing Democrats have embraced a work less approach to assistance.

It is President Obama's nanny state policies that are making Americans soft
President Obama was criticized by Eric Cantor, Rick Perry and others for claiming America has gotten a "little soft." The truth is President Obama and Democrats are working hard to implement a nanny state that offers Americans the opportunity to go soft. Obama and Democrats are now trying to extend unemployment benefits to 99 weeks. That is almost two full years. Obama has been paying states to add people to the food stamp rolls which now encompass record numbers. Soon, Obamacare will offer many more Americans free or heavily subsidized health care. President Obama and Democrats are working hard to expand the nanny state and make good old-fashioned hard work unnecessary. Almost half of Americans now live in households that get some sort of government benefit. Meanwhile, farmers in Colorado can't hire enough Americans to pick their crops even though they are paying $10.50 an hour and Colorado has an 8.5% unemployment rate. When Obama claimed Americans are getting a "little soft," it is a prophecy he is working to fulfill.
(NYT)- Six hours was enough, between the 6 a.m. start time and noon lunch break, for the first wave of local workers to quit. Some simply never came back and gave no reason. Twenty-five of them said specifically, according to farm records, that the work was too hard. On the Harold farm, pickers walk the rows alongside a huge harvest vehicle called a mule train, plucking ears of corn and handing them up to workers on the mule who box them and lift the crates, each weighing 45 to 50 pounds.
“It is not an easy job,” said Kerry Mattics, 49, another H-2A farmer here in Olathe, who brought in only a third of his usual Mexican crew of 12 workers for his 50-acre fruit and vegetable farm, then struggled to make it through the season. “It’s outside, so if it’s wet, you’re wet, and if it’s hot you’re hot,” he said.
Still, Mr. Mattics said, he can’t help feeling that people have gotten soft.
“They wanted that $10.50 an hour without doing very much,” he said. “I know people with college degrees, working for the school system and only making 11 bucks.”

Michelle Obama described Barack Obama's work ethic as "tireless", but he only worked 4 hours per day in May
Michelle Obama is worried Barack Obama is working too hard.
"I see the sadness and worry that's creasing his face," she said to a crowd of about 500 at the Pasadena luncheon organized by the Southern California Women For Obama. She described his worth ethic as “tireless,” according to pool reports.According to President Obama's official schedule, he only worked 4 hours per day in May and that includes the time he spent attending awards banquets.
"He reads every word, every memo, so he is better prepared than the people briefing him," she said. "This man doesn't take a day off."
At the President's press conference today, Mr. Obama made frequent references about the Congresses need to "do its job." He also implied that he was hard at work, in Washington and the Congress should be too. An analysis of Mr. Obama's published work schedule raises some questions about the actual level of presidential exertion.Michelle Obama must think golfing is work.
According to the White House, the President doesn't work all that much. During the month of May, which included 21 working days, President Obama claims he worked about 92 hours (91.95 to be exact). That's according to the White House schedule, posted on the whitehouse.gov Website. That equates to an exhausting 4.4 hours per day. Excluding his grueling G8 summit travels during the week of May 23 (when he was forced to endure eight hour work days!), Mr. Obama worked an average of 3.25 hours per day when at the White House in May.
Indeed, the President's schedule is so thin, the White House Communications team sees it necessary to include the Vice President's meetings, when he subs for the President* for padding. For example, on May 3rd and May 17th, Vice President Biden held working breakfast meetings at 7:45 am with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in the President's stead.

The Obama Economy: Many Will Have to Work Into Their Eighties
How long will you have to work before you retire? It may be longer than you think.
Well, it turns out that working longer is indeed an option, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute latest study. The only problem is that the latest research shows that you’ll have to work much longer than you anticipated. In fact, many Americans will have to keep on working well into their 70s and 80s to afford retirement, according to the study, titled “The Impact of Deferring Retirement Age on Retirement Income Adequacy.”
What’s more, it’s even worse for low-income workers, according Jack VanDerhei, one of the co-authors of the study. Those who earned (on average over the course of their careers) less than $11,700 per year, the lowest income quartile, would need to defer retirement till age 84 before 90% of those households would have just a 50% chance of affording retirement.
Those who earned between $11,700 and $31,200 will need to work till age 76 to have a 50% chance of covering basic expenses in retirement. Those who earned between $31,200 and $72,500 will need to work to age 72 to have a 50% chance and those who earned more than $72,500, those in the highest income quartile, catch a break; they get stop working at age 65 to have a 50/50 chance of funding their retirement.

Obama is Working Hard (Not)
Being President is a hard job, but somebody has to do it. Our country is facing many serious problems; high unemployment and a stagnant war in Afghanistan are just couple of them. Many Americans have a vision of President Obama rising early for a busy eighteen hour day. Let's check his schedule and see how he is doing.
Obama quits work at lunch on Friday after a light morning.

Obama doesn't resume work until lunch on Monday.

You have to wonder if the 9.5% of Americans unemployed wouldn't be willing to work a little harder for:
