TORONTO — Google has been caught afoul of the law by displaying web ads linked to a person’s health history, according to Canada’s interim privacy commissioner Chantal Bernier.An investigation by her office backed up a man’s complaints that he was seeing so-called behavioural advertisements based on his web browsing history. After searching for information about devices to treat sleep apnea, he began to see ads for those devices as he browsed the web.While behavioural advertising is not illegal, Canada’s privacy law does not allow consumers to be targeted based on “sensitive personal information,” including their health.Google’s privacy policy outlaws displaying advertisements based on race, religion, sexual orientation or health. But the Mountain View, Calif.-based company acknowledged that some advertisers using its ad-serving platform were not following the policy.

Google Inc. is eliminating advertisements for Crisis Pregnancy Centers because the ads reportedly come up 79 percent of the time when Web searches are made for "abortion clinics," The Hill reported. 
Crisis Pregnancy Centers are operated by groups that oppose abortion. Google had been lobbied by NARAL Pro-Choice America to remove the advertisements.
"Anyone looking for abortion services should be able to depend on their search engine to provide them with accurate resources," Ilyse Hogue, the group's president, said in a statement. "Anything less is aiding and abetting ideologically driven groups with a calculated campaign to lie to and shame women making one of the most important decisions of our lives."
Pro-life supporters say that the centers provide necessary options besides abortion, The Hill reported. 
Carol Tobias of the National Right to Life Committee termed Google's decision "unconscionable" and said many pregnant women would be hurt by the move. "Google is waging a war on women by limiting knowledge of the options and services available to women," she told The Hill.

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt may have helped Barack Obama build a political technology juggernaut, but now another top Google executive is trying to help Republicans catch up.

Michele Weslander Quaid, who serves as the company’s “Innovation Evangelist” and chief technology officer for its public-sector division, is joining the board of directors of Voter Gravity, a campaign technology company that serves GOP candidates and conservative groups.

It’s a bit of a political coming-out for Weslander Quaid, who joined Google in 2011 and had not previously been active in partisan politics.

The move comes as Google, which had become known in Washington as a reliable source of campaign cash and technology talent to Democrats, is working to diversify its political footprint. The tech giant has pumped cash into conservative groups and hired an array of Republicans to interface with the press and politicians, including former Rep. Susan Molinari, who became head of its Washington office in 2012, as well as former George W. Bush aide Rob Saliterman and GOP campaign flak Jill Hazelbaker.

Earlier this week, Techdirt picked up on a passing mention in a Brazilian news story and a Slate article to point out that the US National Security Agency had apparently impersonated Google on at least one occasion to gather data on people. (Mother Jones subsequently pointed out Techdirt's point-out.)
Brazilian site Fantastico obtained and published a document leaked by Edward Snowden, which diagrams how a "man in the middle attack" involving Google was apparently carried out.
A technique commonly used by hackers, a MITM attack involves using a fake security certificate to pose as a legitimate Web service, bypass browser security settings, and then intercept data that an unsuspecting person is sending to that service. Hackers could, for example, pose as a banking Web site and steal passwords.

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has ordered Google Inc. to comply with FBI warrantless demands for customer data.

U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston on Tuesday rejected Google’s argument that the so-called National Security Letters the company received from the FBI were unconstitutional and unnecessary. Illston ordered Google to comply with the secret demands even though she found the letters unconstitutional in March in a separate case filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

She acknowledged as much in her four-page order in the Google case made on May 20 and obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

Illston put the Google ruling on hold until the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could decide the matter. Until then, she said the Mountain View, Calif.-based company would have to comply with the letters unless it showed the FBI didn’t follow proper procedures in making its demands for customer data in the 19 letters Google is challenging.

CNET has learned that U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco rejected Google's request to modify or throw out 19 so-called National Security Letters, a warrantless electronic data-gathering technique used by the FBI that does not need a judge's approval. Her ruling came after a pair of top FBI officials, including an assistant director, submitted classified affidavits.

The litigation taking place behind closed doors in Illston's courtroom -- a closed-to-the-public hearing was held on May 10 -- could set new ground rules curbing the FBI's warrantless access to information that Internet and other companies hold on behalf of their users. Christians across the nation are outraged after Google decided to honor labor leader Cesar Chavez’s birthday instead of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday — accusing the web giant of being anti-Christian.

The web search engine typically redesigns its logo to commemorate major holidays with a special “doodle.” The Easter Sunday “doodle” features an image of Chavez inside the Google graphic — instead of artwork honoring Easter.

“Let’s see Cesar Chavez rise from the grave,” one angry reader wrote.

(Reuters) - Google Inc rejected a request by the White House on Friday to reconsider its decision to keep online a controversial YouTube movie clip that has ignited anti-American protests in the Middle East.

The Internet company said it was censoring the video in India and Indonesia after blocking it on Wednesday in Egypt and Libya, where U.S. embassies have been stormed by protestors enraged over depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as a fraud and philanderer.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in a fiery siege on the embassy in Benghazi.

Google said was further restricting the clip to comply with local law rather than as a response to political pressure.

"We've restricted access to it in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt, given the very sensitive situations in these two countries," the company said. "This approach is entirely consistent with principles we first laid out in 2007."

White House officials had asked Google earlier on Friday to reconsider whether the video had violated YouTube's terms of service. The guidelines can be viewed here

Stupid: Frenchman caught peeing in front yard by Google Inc.'s Street View files lawsuit

Looks like the U.S. isn't the only place where frivolous lawsuits are filed.

NANTES, France (Reuters) - A Frenchman took Google to court Thursday over a photo published online by its Street View application showing him urinating in his front yard which he believes has made him the laughing stock of his village in rural northwest France.

The man, who is aged around 50 and lives in a village of some 3,000 people in the Maine-et-Loire region, is demanding the removal of the photo, in which locals have recognized him despite his face being blurred out.

He also wants 10,000 euros ($13,300) in damages.

"Everyone has the right to a degree of secrecy," his lawyer, Jean-Noel Bouillard, told Reuters. "In this particular case, it's more amusing than serious. But if he'd been caught kissing a woman other than his wife, he would have had the same issue."

Google Inc.'s Street View, covering some 30 countries and available in France since 2008, enables users of Google Maps to also view photos of streets taken by its camera cars, which have cameras hoisted on frames on their roofs. Keep on reading...

Shameful! BP Buys Oil Spill Search Words ON Google And Yahoo To Redirect People To Their Site!

In a shameful attempt to spin the Gulf oil spill, BP has admitted they bought search the term 'oil spill' on Google and Yahoo. Instead of real news about the spill, people who click the link at the top of the search result page are directed to a BP site.

In their most tenacious effort to control the ‘spin’ on the worst oil spill disaster in the history, BP has purchased top internet search engine words so they can re-direct people away from real news on the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe.

BP spokesman Toby Odone confirmed to ABC News that the oil giant had in fact bought internet search terms. So now when someone searches the words ‘oil spill’, on the internet, the top link will re-direct them to BP’s official company website.

This would not be the first time that BP has tried to control information to protect the company’s public image...

Al Gore Advised Google on Search Results?

Well, didn't he claim to have invented the Internet? Actually, Al Gore said,

"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Snopes.com claims "create" and "invent" have entirely different meanings. Dictionary.com has this definition for "create."

to evolve from one's own thought or imagination, as a work of art or an invention.

Now that we have dealt with that issue, should Al Gore be advising Google on search results? No. Al Gore majored in Government in college. He is not a computer expert anymore than he is a climate expert after taking two natural science classes in college and receiving a "D" and a "C" as grades. So, what were Al Gore and Google up to at that meeting? The answer is unknown, but Al Gore's interest in promoting the global warming scam and Google's love of Democrats are both well known.

If enacted by Congress, this change will cost many U.S. companies billions. The high tech sector will be among the hardest hit. In a great example of "karma," many of these companies are closely tied to or led by Obama campaign supporters. Bill Gates endorsed Obama ahead of the 2008 election. This change will cost Microsoft over $1 billion a year in additional taxes. Google CEO Eric Schmidt campaigned for the president last year and has subsequently served as a technology adviser. This change will cost Google over $1 billion and raise their effective tax rate from 27.8 percent to 45.2 percent according to their 2008 annual report. We can only hope Obama supporter Warren Buffet is holding some of those distressed Chrysler and GM bonds. AP reported:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — President Barack Obama's plan to impose U.S. taxes on corporate America's overseas profits threatens to open a big crater in the financial statements of technology companies.

While additional taxes are rarely popular, Obama's decision to go after corporate earnings outside the United States is a particularly prickly subject for technology executives because the industry has been steadily boosting its overseas sales amid rising demand for its gadgetry and services.

If Obama's proposal becomes law, the hard-hit companies would include tech bellwethers like Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. Each of those companies realized a benefit of more than $1 billion from lower foreign tax rates in their most recent fiscal years — an advantage that could lost if Obama is able to change the rules.

I must admit that this is sweet revenge. A few years ago, tech savvy internet users with "Bush derangement syndrome" linked President Bushes bio with the Google search term "miserable failure." Now, the label has been transferred to President Barack Obama.

Newly minted President Barack Obama has enough problems to tackle without a Google bomb getting thrown into the mix.

In 2003, haters of President George W. Bush with a mean streak and tech savvy managed to Google-bomb him as a “miserable failure” — meaning that a rash of users linked Bush’s name to the words “miserable failure” so that if the term was Googled, Web sites referencing him would show up higher in the search.

According to a Search Engine Land article, Obama is inheriting all the old links from Bush’s biography to the term “miserable failure” because the link to his biography was swapped for Bush’s on the White House site on Inauguration Day. As a result, a search for “miserable failure” on Yahoo will likely yield Obama’s biography, and on Google, a search for “failure” will do the same. Excerpted from blogs.wsj.com
