U.S. officials confirm that Adan Garar, said by U.S. intelligence to be the mastermind of the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya, was killed in a drone strike this week.
CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that the strike was carried out Thursday in southern Somalia. Garar was traveling in a car hit by Hellfire missiles from a Predator drone.
At least 67 people were killed in the 2013 attack.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for Kenya's sending of troops into Somalia.
A senior Kenyan official, who insisted on anonymity because he wasn't authorized to give the information to the media, told the Associated Press that Garar was also suspected of planning failed attacks on Kenya's coast and in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, last year.

Beirut (AFP) – A senior Hezbollah commander branded by the FBI as one of the world’s most wanted terrorists was killed fighting in Syria, residents of his village in southern Lebanon told AFP Tuesday.
Powerful Shiite movement Hezbollah has deployed thousands of fighters into neighbouring Syria to back President Bashar al-Assad’s army as he battles insurgents who have been trying to overthrow him for the past three years.
“Fawzi Ayoub was killed fighting in Syria. His funeral was held in (his home village of) Ain Qana yesterday (Monday). Many people came to the funeral, to give their condolences to his family,” a resident of the village said on condition of anonymity.
According to another resident of Ain Qana, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Beirut, “Ayoub was a leading Hezbollah commander in the Aleppo area” in northern Syria.
The FBI’s website says Ayoub was indicted in the United States in 2009 for “wilfully and knowingly” trying to enter Israel, Hezbollah’s arch-enemy, with a fake US passport “for the purpose of conducting a bombing.”

Arab media reported Sunday that a senior Hezbollah terror leader was killed in recent days in a battle with Syrian opposition forces. The battle occurred in the Damascus area.
The reports did not identify the terrorist, but in recent days Hezbollah-affiliated news outlets showed images of the funeral of senior Hezbollah commander Ali Hossam Nasser. The funeral took place in the area of Nabatiya in south Lebanon. Nasser is considered the supreme commander of Hezbollah forces in Syria.
If the report is correct, the death of Nasser is just one of the latest in a series of setbacks for Hezbollah in Lebanon. Last weekend, rebels in Syria claimed that they had killed at least 42 Hezbollah terrorists, who were fighting with soldiers loyal to President Bashar al-Assad on behalf of Iran. The deaths were reported by Arab television station Al-Arabiya, which quoted a rebel leader as saying that the operation was a “high quality one.”

The police chief, Edward Deveau, describes how cops nearly apprehended the older suspect, and were placing handcuffs on him in the middle of the street Thursday night, when the younger suspect came at officers in a carjacked SUV. The cops were able “to dive out of the way,” and the younger suspect then continued to drive directly over his brother and dragging him through the street. That’s how the older suspect died, according to the police chief.

BREAKING NEWS: One of two suspects in the shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer has died and a massive manhunt is underway for another, who is believed to be tied to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said early Friday on Twitter that one of the two suspects in that officer's shooting was killed. He said the at-large suspect, labeled by the FBI as "suspect two" in the marathon bombing, was "armed and dangerous."

"We believe this to be a terrorist," Davis said in a press conference. "We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody."

The Middlesex district attorney said the two men are suspected of killing the MIT police officer on campus late Thursday, then stealing a car at gunpoint and later releasing its driver unharmed. Fahd al-Quso was on the FBI’s most wanted list for his role in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole. It seems he ran into a U.S. missile.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — An airstrike Sunday killed a top al-Qaida leader on the FBI’s most wanted list for his role in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole warship, Yemeni officials said. The airstrike resembled earlier U.S. drone attacks, but the U.S. did not immediately confirm it.

Fahd al-Quso was hit by a missile as he stepped out of his vehicle, along with another al-Qaida operative in the southern Shabwa province, Yemeni military officials said. They were speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance with military regulations.

The airstrike came as the U.S. and Yemen cooperate in a battle against al-Qaida in southern Yemen.

Al-Quso, 37, was on the FBI’s most wanted list, with a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. He was indicted in the U.S. for his role in the 2000 bombing in the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen, in which 17 American sailors were killed and 39 injured.

He served more than five years in a Yemeni prison for his role in the attack and was released in 2007. He briefly escaped prison in 2003 but later turned himself in to serve the rest of his sentence.

A telephone text message claiming to be from al-Qaida media arm confirmed al-Quso was killed in the strike.
