Chicago FOP standing behind cop on trial for murder...

The FOP is paying for his lawyer. Police unions are a big part of what is wrong with police departments in many communities. Most police are decent people trying to do a difficult job, but it's almost impossible to weed out the bad apples because of police unions. 

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The main Chicago police union is standing behind the white officer who was charged this week with first-degree murder for gunning down a black teenager. It is facing a backlash from leaders of the city’s black community as a result.

On its website, the Chicago lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), has posted a bail fund appeal for the officer, Jason Van Dyke, who is accused of shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times just six seconds after emerging from his patrol car on a street in Chicago on Oct. 20, 2014. An earlier link on the FOP's front page to a GoFundMe campaign was removed after the fundraising site said it violated a policy against its use by criminal defendants.

The FOP also is paying the lawyer representing Van Dyke, Daniel Herbert, himself a former FOP member the union pays to represent Chicago cops in misconduct cases. Funding such a defense is a common practice among U.S. police unions.

In an alley in Denver, police gunned down a 17-year-old girl joyriding in a stolen car. In the backwoods of North Carolina, police opened fire on a gun-wielding moonshiner. And in a high-rise apartment in Birmingham, Ala., police shot an elderly man after his son asked them to make sure he was okay. Douglas Harris, 77, answered the door with a gun.
The three are among at least 385 people shot and killed by police nationwide during the first five months of this year, more than two a day, according to a Washington Post analysis. That is more than twice the rate of fatal police shootings tallied by the federal government over the past decade, a count that officials concede is incomplete.
“These shootings are grossly under­reported,” said Jim Bueermann, a former police chief and president of the Washington-based Police Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving law enforcement. “We are never going to reduce the number of police shootings if we don’t begin to accurately track this information.”

Of course many of them are justifiable shootings where the deceased had a gun and even shot at the officers.

Obama Jedi Mind Trick: Bayonets were only new military item added to banned list for police

The other items on the list are not currently being supplied to police by the pentagon. Deception, thy name is Obama.

President Obama's new restrictions on transferring Defense Department equipment to local police, in reality, adds only one new piece of gear to the "banned" list: the bayonet.
Every other item on the "prohibited equipment list" released Monday was already a no-go for the Defense Department, a senior defense official told the Washington Examiner.
In 1999, the Pentagon banned the transfer of grenade launchers, which civilian law enforcement was using to fire tear gas. It banned transfer of tracked vehicles, predominantly the M113 armored personnel carrier, in 2011. The department continued prohibiting the transfer of .50 caliber or higher firearms and ammunition to local law enforcement since the intra-agency transfer program began in the early 1990s. The same went for weaponized aircraft and vessels, which were never provided.

Another item on the prohibited list, camouflage uniforms, hasn't been transferred by the Pentagon since 2008.
"The department was not providing a majority of the items on the list," said the senior defense official who asked not to be identified.

Not surprisingly, none of the mainstream media pointed this out, not even FOX News. 

Here is why you might not want to stay at Motel 6

If this report is true, it seems like a violation of guest privacy at the least.

The popular hotel chain, Motel 6, has recently decided to partner with the police to violate the rights of their guests. Without the consent of the guest, or even informing them whatsoever, Motel 6 employees will now turn over the guest information to the police, who will then run a background check on the subject. And, as a policy, the motel chain is not even bothering to inform guests at check-in. They are not told about the hidden layer of screening – yet they are subjected to it. As of now, guests who check-in at Warwick’s Motel 6 will not be told theirnames are on a list that goes to the police station every night. Alerting motel guests that local police know their whereabouts “is not a normal process of our check-in,” said Victor Glover, a vice president of safety and security for G6 Hospitality, the parent company for Motel 6. Cue the predictable excuses: “If you aren’t doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide.””

Giving the government the ability to track the location of citizens who are not engaged in crime is scary.

It hasn’t been a good day for the Baltimore Fraternity Order of Police Lodge 3 (FOP). The police union published a public letter this morning that asked State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby to assign a special prosecutor to investigate Freddie Gray’s death and included a subtle threat to the political career of her husband, City Councilman Nick Mosby, only to have Marilyn Mosby announce charges against six officers a few minutes later. Baltimore citizens celebrated in the streets when the charges were announced, and Mosby got a flood of press coverage, with a New York Times headline announce she is “Seen as Tough on Police Misconduct” and a New York magazine post calling her a “certified bad ass.”
Then, FOP published a blog post on its website later in the day, saying that it had “been overwhelmed with the enormous generosity of people from around the world” and was trying to start an online fundraiser to “assist our [six charged] officers with their living expenses during their unpaid suspension. [sic] as well as to help defray their legal expenses.”

Hwang Jung, owner of the market at North Fremont Avenue and Mosher Street where the newly disclosed stop took place, said officers in suits came into his store last week asking to see surveillance footage from April 12 at around 8:30 a.m.

After viewing the footage, the officers gave him their number and said two more officers would come copy the footage, which happened a few hours later, Hwang said.

The footage was lost, he said, when his store was looted in the days after Gray's death. He said he couldn't be sure exactly what day the officers came by but he thought it was early in the week of April 19.

It was April 24, a Friday, that Deputy Commissioner Davis told reporters that there had only been three stops en route to the police station: the first to put leg irons on Gray, the second "to deal with Mr. Gray" (an incident, he said, that remained under investigation) and the third to pick up a prisoner in an unrelated matter.

The new stop, Davis said Thursday, came between the first and second stops.[...]

Batts, the police commissioner, has said Gray should have been buckled in.

"We know he was not buckled in the transport wagon, as he should've been. No excuses for that, period," Batts said last week.

As for when Gray suffered a severe spinal injury, Batts said there was potential it could have happened either in or outside the police van.

Police have said five of the six officers have been interviewed by detectives, while the sixth invoked the right to decline to be questioned.

WJLA reported the van driver was the officer who has not be interviewed.

That’s thanks to efforts that led to Governor Steve Bullock signing House Bill 330 (HB330) into law yesterday.
The Tenth Amendment Center, the premier states’ rights and nullification organization, says, “By stripping state and local police of this military-grade gear and requiring them to report on their acquisition and use, it makes them less likely to cooperate with the feds and removes incentives for partnerships.”

While the Pentagon’s “1033 Program” is the most well-known source of police militarization, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also offers grants to sheriffs and other local police that are triple the value of 1033. More here...

The federal government shipped nearly 4,000 more assault rifles to local law enforcement agencies in the three months following the Ferguson riots, marking a huge surge in the amount of lethal firearms being doled out to police and sheriff’s offices.
The Ferguson riots drew attention and criticism to the massive firepower state and local police are now able to bring to bear on their citizens, and earned scrutiny for the Pentagon project, known as the 1033 program, that helps arm many of those agencies by making surplus military equipment available to them.
President Obama called for a review of the program, civil rights advocates said the local police had become indistinguishable from the military, and even some police departments questioned their own policies.

Personally, I prefer a murder charge. If someone tells you they can't breath multiple time while you are choking them and you choke harder, that isn't an accident or involuntary manslaughter. It's murder. 

Washington (CNN) -- The New York officer involved in the death of Eric Garner should no longer be on the police force, Sen. Rand Paul argued Monday.

The Kentucky Republican said Daniel Pantaleo lacked "discretion" when he placed Garner in a chokehold for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.

"You probably shouldn't have the power to be a policeman anymore, at the very least," Paul said at a Mississippi Republican fundraiser, adding that the employment standard for police is "much higher," according to video by the Clarion-Ledger newspaper.

Out of control police update: Drunken state narcotics agent shoots two drinking buddies

Before anyone receives a police badge, they need of be severely screened.  It's not happening now.

Cops swatted a .40-caliber Glock out of a drunken state narcotics agent’s hand Friday night after he shot two drinking buddies on the Upper West Side, authorities and witnesses said.
Amsterdam Ave. erupted in gunfire and blood-curdling screams just after 9 p.m. when Victor Zambrano Jr., 49, shot a 31-year-old woman in the left foot and the woman’s 42-year-old boyfriend in the right calf during an argument over his weapon, neighbors and police sources said.
The three pals had been drinking together and were walking on Amsterdam Ave. near W. 82nd St. when the woman asked the New York State Bureau of Narcotics enforcement agent for his pistol, a police source said.
Zambrano handed it over, but quickly demanded it back, cop sources said. As the argument became increasingly heated, the agent fired a round. The bullet ricocheted off the concrete and hit both the woman and her boyfriend.[...]

San Diego Unified School District Police Department has acquired an armored vehicle...

These morons need to find another outlet for their testosterone. Also, they seem to have too much money on their hands. School police don't need armored vehicle suitable for combat in Afghanistan. They plan to paint a red cross on the side. That will make all the difference.

The nation gaped at the sight of a military-grade Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle trundling through Ferguson, but it turns out that was relatively restrained policing.
Relative, that is, to San Diego, where police will use a similar steel behemoth for the city’s schools.
The San Diego Unified School District Police Department has acquired its own vehicle, known as a MRAP, and expect it to be operational by October.
“I can totally see people thinking ‘Oh, my God. Are they going to be rolling armoured vehicles into our schools and what the hell’s going on?’” Captain Joe Florentino told local media.
Police intended to use it to rescue children – be it from rampaging gunmen or natural disasters, he said. “When we have an emergency at a school, we’ve got to get in and save kids.”
