There are countries where a single-payer system may be working. But I believe – and I’ve even taken some flak from members of my own party for this belief – that it is important for us to build on our traditions here in the United States. Here is a video of Obama lying to the AMA and a 2007 video clip where Obama talks about eliminating employer coverage.
From the video:
I would hope that we set up a system that allows those who can go through their employer to access a federal system or a state pool of some sort. But I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's going to be potentially some transition process. I can envision a decade out or fifteen years out or 20 out.
